First will come seperate "Physics Cards", Agiea has a lead, but nVidia and ATi are working on their own, transcapitalized solutions that will probably be embedded into their video cards. (this is being worked on). What does this mean for the FPS gamer? Well, for one, games are prettier. more stuff is breakable, and blood splatters.. er.. splat realistically.
What does this mean us, the server-side dependant gamer? I'm not sure. yet. |

The idea of a PPU is great...but the way I understand the AGEIA PPU, only certain games support it. Its not like an ATI or NVIDIA graphics card, whereas you can just plug it in and expect it to work with everything. If they can get past that issue, or have EVERY game support the card, then imo it seems like a must have.

Aye, only some games will support it... for now.
For it to truly catch on, they all have to support it. Otherwise Nvidia & ATI will run the show. Kind of how a Dual Core 64-bit CPU doesnt help with games right now since none take advantage of it. I expect that within the next 2-3 yrs we'll see that happen. I've already bought games that support Windows XP ONLY (no 98, no 2000), so it's just a matter of time. _____________________

An SPU is the next logical progression, given the most popular "activity" in Second Life. I'm guessing you all can figure out what the acronym is.

FPU = floating point unit (believe it or not, early x86 CPUs like the XT and 286 didn't have floating point capabilities; the FPU became standard with the 386)
