Winamp nags you to update. I haven't discovered a way to stop it permanently from nagging, so I have upgraded in order to make it shut up. The upgrades deal with stuff I don't want or need. I have upgraded too far.
What in your view is the optimum version of Winamp?

Lol @ iTunes.. (unless you were serious) My replacement was FooBar 2000 . Nice and compact and simple. Also the best sound quality.

XMMS. Actually, 2.x is probably the best of Winamp, in my opinion. 5.x was good, but yells at you more often.

From: Reitsuki Kojima Quite serious. Are you mac or pc? I tried iTunes once, just to see what the craze was about. But to me it just seemed like a slow bloated app.. But I guess im biased. I have a strange thing for fast small apps. Theres a few exeptions though, I like photoshop, etc, even though its bloated to hell. And on the small fast app bit, if your a bit-torrent user uTorrent is super Also for firewall, Tiny firewall if very low cpu usage overhead (compaired to sygate -- is a cpu hog!). (Id say this one is for more knowledgeable computer users though). Kinda o.t. hu? oops

From: Reitsuki Kojima iTunes Oddly enough I have to agree with this. I used to consider Winamp to be a critical piece of software on any PC, but since I got an iPod I very rarely used Winamp anymore. But then again if I could use Winamp to sync with the iPod I probably wouldn't have tried iTunes at all.

WinAmp 2.91 as it's the last known version to run Shoutcast reliably. If you don't like the nag screens, just disable the update notification.

Any version of Winamp crashes my computer an locks it up. I use ITunes or WMP 11.

Winamp 5 was based on version 2, so I would agree with those above and say that the latest in the 2.x series is the way to go. Here are all the old versions of WinAmp: http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=winampDo not use version 3, it was horrible. You might also wish to try VLC - it's not pretty and shiney, but it will play pretty much any media you throw at it. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

I bought winamp so I could do clean rips of my cd collection. It does seem to be a real dog in terms of response time, especially at startup. (wtf is it doing during the couple mins it takes to start?) I use a minimal interface and making playlists is simple for me.
I tried iTunes when I had and iPod and it drove me crazy. I tried making playlists and it seemed to have the most obtuse interface I had ever seen. (this is on a pc) I wound up making playlists in winamp and importing them for use with the iPod. I have since gotten rid of both iTunes and the iPos.
I prefer wmp for video, but the mp3 player is also pretty reasonable. I have to use it to update my iRiver. It generally seems clunkier for music, but (oddly) cleaner for video.
One day software makers will realize that producing clean and streamlined software is much more important than adding (mostly) useless bells and whistles.

Please correct me if I am wrong. But dont you have to have quicktime for SL in order to hear streaming media in Sl? I have not gotten correct sound in SL since I started. Well wait once I did for a couple of hours. I do not know what was different at that time. I suspect that there is some hidden conflict between winamp wmp and or quicktime. There are a great many maintenance things I need to do for my system, like sorting graphics files. So the sound thing has not been my highest priority. Do most of you guys use a paid version of quicktime? As I am using the free ver. could that be my prob?
