I have been on a hiatus in WoW, and the music in it drives me nuts, so I have been turning it off and playing my own, problem is, I am getting bored with some of the newer CD's I have purchased, and don't want to get burned out on them. Note that I mean "new" to me, some of the CDs have been out for a while.

Those "new" CDs include:

M.I.A. Arula

Audioslave

Natasha Beddingfield

Joss Stone

Beck

Flaming Lips

The Red Elvis's

As you can see my tastes are diverse - so hit me with your best shot, fire away. ;)

White Stripes

Muse

Talking Heads (I like the Stop Making Sense live album)

Try www.pandora.com too - a neat little setup where they make radio stations for you based on a band that you input. Great way to find new music in the style you like.

Or try last.fm . Does what Cory mentions that Pandora does, but also stores a profile of all the music you play via your media players if you let it, and then builds a recommendation list based on what other people who are listening to the same stuff as you are also listening to.

This is my profile page, if you wanna see an example

Can't go wrong with the Prodigy Discography, or some of the older Portishead stuff (what I'm listening to currently) :)

PS. Kris Ritter stole my IW profile quote!! lol

Beck
Flaming Lips
This points like an arrow at Elliot Smith and if your singular exposure to him is "Needle in the Hay" that would be equivalent to saying "Beck's work is all like Sexx Laws".

Welcome back, NoLOLan!! :D

Some artists I have found recently (they existed long before I come across them, but I am just now finding them):

Beth Orton
A3
The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Sellers Digby
Mates of State
Sun Kil Moon (Red House Painters)
Arcade Fire
Kaiser Chiefs
Death Cab for Cutie
The Shins

Total Flashback:
I have dragged E.L.O. screaming from my past. I am not sure why, but I am loving the hell out of re-listening. (E.L.O. was the first album I owned--I had it on 8-Track.)

Yum, yum, yum.

i'm only going to make one suggestion here..

Ween.

one of the cool things about Ween is that the only way to know what they truly sound like, it's best to listen to eveery song from every album. such is the divergance of their music.

plus, with Beck and The Flaming Lips listed there it seems like a natural fit.

Edit: i lied.. i'm making one more suggestion..

Mars Volta. talk about texturized music..

Someone gave me Pure Guava years ago... but I think i lost it. I did like the music, but its not something that you're going to get into on the first listen. (I had a roommate who threatened physical violence on me if I played it when he was home.) To be honest, I haven't listened to any of their other stuff, mostly because I forgot about them. Which of their albums would you suggest as a first listen?

Hmmm, here's a short list of what's getting some heavy play right now on my mp3 player:

Interpol (love their Antics album, got it for Valentine's Day)

Cake (Comfort Eagle is my current fave single of theirs)

All American Rejects (yes, their Move Along single is pure top-40 fodder... but it's so catchy)

The Killers

Violent Femmes (I like American Music - not new, I know)

White Stripes

Dogs Die In Hot Cars (Godhopping is a song that has grown on me)

Amanda Ghost (I like a dance remix of her single Filthy Mind done by Peter Rauhofer)

-- and (I feel so teeny-bopper admitting this)--

My Chemical Romance (gawd, Gerard Way is just so cuuuuute... okay, I just made myself gag :o )

I just love her voice.

She did a beautiful version of If It Be Your Will on a Leonard Cohen tribute album. (Either Tower of Song or I'm Your Fan, I forget which at the moment and I'm too lazy to look.) I think it's her voice at its best.

Some things getting heavy rotation in my playlists lately..
Elvis Costello, The Clash, Billy Bacon & The Forbidden Pigs, Ray Charles, Tiger Army, Son Volt, The Reverend Horton Heat, Royal Crown Revue, Indigo Swing, Johnny Cash, Poe, Snakefarm, Winter Hours...

Anything by Porcupine Tree - By far my favorite band I've discovered in the last ten years. Or just tune in to my Live365 Station. I play a lot of them.

well, fist, in my opinion.. Pure Guava was the least attractive album Ween has done, although there are some great tunes on there. (Dont Get 2 Close 2 My Fantasy being a chilling example of one), but as far as what else to start with..

i'd say it's always good to grab the first (major-ish) release, God Ween Satan - The Oneness. lots of songs, lots of craziness. but for more listenability, i'd suggest checking out Quebec or White Pepper. awesome albums.. you'll be amazed.

of course, Chocolate and Cheese is a classic and includes the beautiful, Tear for Eddie.

then again.. if you like country, you could try 12 Golden Country Greats (has 10 songs).

or there's The Mollusk with it's watery themes... i get a kick out of, The Blarney Stone. from the sounds of the song, it sounds like it's title could easily be the name of a bar.. where the song sounds like it's taking place. you know.. rough Irish fisherman type thing.

Awesome! Thanks all!

Kris - checked out that site, looks cool and will sign up.

Introvert - I just read a short bio on Smith - very interested and wondering how he evaded my radar, especially with his tragic demise.

Euterpe! Jeff Lynn is one of my all time faves - that guy's a genius, and I break out some ELO now and then too :P

Eggy - I love Torley's site, and find myself going there late at nite and listening.

Beryl - Cake rocks. No one quite satirizes like McCrea, and the horns and other unusal intsruments suck me in. We go see them every year they come through here (Minneapolis) - they always play a small venue, very good times.

Some other suggestions I will look into -

Mars Volta, Feeder, Jann Arden, Porcupine Tree, The Beastles (sound so weird I have to hear it).

We like this kind of music. Jazz is strictly for stay-at-homes.
