I saw the movie Blade again the other night, and as always I wondered about a particular song in the film. Much googling later I found out it was 'Chin Chin' by Bang Wa Cherry. Unfortunately that band has never put out any CD's it seems. However, that style of Japanese girl pop really makes me smile in a goofy way. All that high pitched girly enthusiasm. SOOO damn cute!! Anyway, does anyone know some other groups I could search for in the same vein?

I don't know the song which you're referring to, but Mini Moni definitely fits the "high pitched girly enthusiasm" description. If you like their music, check out the Mini Moni film which is even crazier.

On the strength of that, I think Japan should be incorporated into Europe, so that they can enter the Eurovision Song Contest.

I do not know Bang Wa Cherry, but you might like ex-Girl. I have seen them live three times and it is a fun show. Their home page is pretty easy to google, but not much music there so I included a link to their myspace page with four full songs and a video you can sample. If you decide to buy some of their music, Kero! Kero! Kero! is very cool. http://www.myspace.com/kerokerokero

Shonen Knife is great. And wasn't the band that was in Kill Bill called the 5-6-7-8's or something?

Because my cow orkers tell me that the best definition of J-pop they've foudn is "japanese music that they don't like". I don't think there's much difference between the two terms. They are both invented by some stupid marketing guys, and openly saying you like J-Pop or J-Rock is much like declaring that you are a pure consumer who diligently suck in what record companies throw at you. To the OP, check this band. High-pitched, eclectic and eccentric. Not sure about enthusiasm. http://www.tsushimamire.com/

Having been, ah, close with an extremely upper class, native-born daughter of Japan many years ago when we were both barely old enough to drink - heh. *winces* I'd pass on the whole experience were it to happen again, thank you. Well, except for a few moments. *still gets headache if he hears "kawaaaiiiiiiiiiiii"*

From: Yumi Murakami Someone once asked me if I was supposed to be Yumi out of Puffy AmiYumi. I hadn't heard of them, so I looked on their website.. and began to ponder the cost of changing to an alt Watch the cartoon they have on Cartoon Network, you might ponder that Alt more. OY! What a downer! Not the best cartoon out there. It was supposedly to bring their popularity to America. Unfortunately, it's also on a premium cable channel (at least here) which means no one is really gonna see it. It's an eclectic mix of american cartoon gags & style with Anime/Manga thrown into the mix. It's not even their real voices. I think the most they have to do with it is the lil' clips of themselves in the begining, some of the music, and the name. Thats about it.

The real girls are so super cute and funny, and the music is very entertaining. But the cartoon is unwatchable for me.

If you are into cheerful and cheesy JPop, you might also like Morning Musume. In fact, if you have a Nintendo DS, import Osu. Tatakae. Ouendan! post hate! It's a superb touch rythm game that's gotten great reviews and is tons of fun to play (even without speaking a word of Japanese. It's not exactly a prerequisite to follow the stories). Have a look at this gameplay video of the INSANE level for an idea of what you will be getting up to at the later stages of the game: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7343113034499135054&q=Ouendan&pl=true Anyway, the reason I mention the game is because it's also got some great / cheesy / fun (pick one ) JPop sound by non girl bands like The Blue Hearts, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, L'Arc-en-Ciel (the one featured in the video), ... That game got me to listen to JPop. It's always good for a smile. Wendel

Ars Nova might be considered to be J-Rock. Girly, yes. Poppy, no. cheerful, occasionally.

My fiance likes Malice Mizer. Not exactly J-Pop, more like J-Goth. She showed me a pic of this hot "chick" in the band. She was really really cute......... till she told me it was actually a guy!!! Men should not be THAT cute in drag!!!!

Utada Hikaru (She does the theme songs for Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2 on the PS2) She has a fantastic voice, and even sounds amazing when singing in English! http://www.utada-online.net/ Also, Koda Kumi (Japanese version of Final Fantasy X-2) and, my personal favorite, Megumi Hayashibaru (Slayers, Lost Universe, Shaman King, etc...) (Yes, I like my J-Pop from games & Anime...)
