An article from wired:

From: someone

The Internet was designed by some very thoughtful people... so thoughtful that they'd make decisions using a "hum" vote. Since no one can hum louder than anyone else, this was an ingenious method of tallying a quick vote on how to proceed. Another thoughtful thing they did, which is mainly responsible for the Internet's success (in my opinion), is make it possible for any packet of information to go anywhere on the net, with all packets given equal preference. This makes it so that anyone can post information, and anyone else can access it.

You'd think that corporations would be smart enough not to kill the goose that is laying the golden eggs, but they're actually trying to do exactly that. Right now. The Internet as we currently know it could cease to exist. Yes, really.

In case you haven't heard, this all came about because the CEO of AT&T got sick of companies such as Google making billions by sending information to people over AT&T's infrastructure pipes, so decided to lobby Congress to allow AT&T to filter traffic based on what it is, who is sending it, and who is receiving it. It doesn't take much foresight to see that this would render the Internet just another mass media outlet, similar to, and just as boring as, radio or television. You'd have to pay to play, and so all the folks who do stuff for free just because it's fun would be locked out of the party.

Don't let them get away with taking away Net Neutrality and killing the Internet. MoveOn.org is rallying the troops. I strongly urge you to use their Sign MoveOn's petition

You americans scare so easily, the chance of this happening legally is about 1 in a million, maybe even higher. And I think has nothing to do with SecondLife. Unless you're packet sniffing which counts as spying/hacking user's content you wouldn't be able to tell what SL is.

It won't happen.

Or, more specifically, dumbasses like the FCC would allow this to happen, but they will be slitting their own throats as content providers simply refuse to pay.

More specifically, the majority population of Sheeples are too stupid to realize what's truely happening despite it being blatatently and unashamedly obvious.

Well, my rl boss makes millions by using 'telephone lines', does that mean he should pay 10 000 USD per minute for those calls instead of the 10 cents a minute?

How dumb.

1. The content providers pay for hosting, colocation, bandwidth
2. The users pay for net access (be that broadband or by telephone lines)

So what is 'free'?

The bill will also deny states the right to keep towns and cities from deploying their own municipal broadband networks

Remember you're talking about a country that subscribes to the best legality money can buy.

Does the inventor of the internet, Al Gore, know about this?

boy jeska, karma is going to swing back you in a big big way

you're sidelining a discussion which is core to very survival of your company.

You really think in your wildest dreams that telcos are going to let FREE heavy bandwidth choke up their pipes? check your bandwidth meter at home sometime .. this is *nothing* compared to what google kicks out.

You guys should be shouiting about this from the rooftops.

I haven't checked on this specific tidbit, but I'm relatively certain that somewhere on Snopes.com you could find that is is simply a bunch of BS.

There was a time not long ago when an Email was floating around talking about how the US postal service wanted to charge money for every email you sent because they were losing too much money on their snail mail service.....'Twas crap also.

Oh how I wish that it was merely a rumor. However, it's very true. They want to make the internet like your cable service.

From www.savetheinternet.com:

How would the gutting of Network Neutrality affect you?

Google users—Another search engine could pay dominant Internet providers like AT&T to guarantee the competing search engine opens faster than Google on your computer.
Innovators with the "next big idea"—Startups and entrepreneurs will be muscled out of the marketplace by big corporations that pay Internet providers for dominant placing on the Web. The little guy will be left in the "slow lane" with inferior Internet service, unable to compete.

Ipod listeners—A company like Comcast could slow access to iTunes, steering you to a higher-priced music service that it owned.

Political groups—Political organizing could be slowed by a handful of dominant Internet providers who ask advocacy groups to pay "protection money" for their websites and online features to work correctly.

Nonprofits—A charity's website could open at snail-speed, and online contributions could grind to a halt, if nonprofits can't pay dominant Internet providers for access to "the fast lane" of Internet service.

Online purchasers—Companies could pay Internet providers to guarantee their online sales process faster than competitors with lower prices—distorting your choice as a consumer.

Small businesses and tele-commuters—When Internet companies like AT&T favor their own services, you won't be able to choose more affordable providers for online video, teleconferencing, Internet phone calls, and software that connects your home computer to your office.

Parents and retirees—Your choices as a consumer could be controlled by your Internet provider, steering you to their preferred services for online banking, health care information, sending photos, planning vacations, etc.

Bloggers—Costs will skyrocket to post and share video and audio clips—silencing citizen journalists and putting more power in the hands of a few corporate-owned media outlets.

Just because it's on Snopes doesn't mean it's not true.

"In recent months, however, some of the telephone and cable companies that control the telecommunications networks over which Internet data flows have floated the idea of creating the electronic equivalent of a paid carpool lane — that is, charging larger or more traffic-intensive Internet businesses and information providers a fee in order to send their traffic via faster and more reliable network pipelines:
Right now, data on the Internet are generally treated equally, like cars outside the carpool lane on a freeway. But like a freeway, the Internet can get congested, particularly as data-heavy applications such as movies and music gain popularity.

You see that congestion when streaming video stops streaming or when the download bar on your computer slows down. So phone companies, which have limited capacity on copper lines, are proposing special tolls on Internet companies to, in effect, set aside a special lane of fast-moving traffic. Cable companies also would benefit.

For instance, online film sites like CinemaNow Inc. might have to pay a premium to send movies uninterrupted, or Apple Computer Inc.'s iTunes Music Store might tack an extra fee on a song download to guarantee instant delivery."
