From: someone Alex Cornell du Houx, a 21-year-old Bowdoin College senior from Solon will head to Iraq for approximately 10 months as part of the Alpha 1st Company Battalion of the Marines. From: someone The senior is most well known on the Bowdoin College campus in his role as development director for the College Democrats of America and as co-president of the Maine College Democrats. Under his leadership, the organization in Maine has grown from two chapters to 23.
While Cornell du Houx has actively rallied against many of President Bush's policies, he feels that his involvement in the Marines is not a conflict of interest. From: someone Others on campus, particularly his political opponents in the Bowdoin College Republicans, feel differently about his service. Daniel Schuberth, a leader of the Bowdoin College Republicans and College Republican national secretary, said, "I applaud Mr. Houx for his service, just as I applaud any other soldier who is brave enough to take up arms in defense of his country. I find it troubling, however, that one of the most vocal opponents of our president, our country and our mission in Iraq has chosen to fight for a cause he claims is wrong. Mr. Houx's rhetoric against the war on terror places him in agreement with the most radical fringes of the Democratic Party, and I am left to question his logic and motivation." http://www.timesrecord.com/website/main.nsf/news.nsf/0/B4F8E5AB7DF904FA052570A50056F681?OpendocumentIt's so sad when a college Republican who chooses to stay at home has to criticize the college Democrat going to war.

What is the nature of good vs evil? Is it more or less a matter of viewpoint?
If I were to, lets say, steal a politition's campaign warchest and use it to help hurricane victims or a charaty hospital, would that be considered evil? If not, why would I likely do more time in prison for doing that as opposed to certain forms of murder?

I hate do agree with a republican, however, he is essentially saying "If you believe anything you've ever said, you wouldn't go fight for everything I've ever said". So amazingly, the republican admits he is a hypocrit, while at the same time calling the democrat an idiot (which he is). On that note, I find no fault with his statement.

Expressing your political views as a civilian and following orders as a marine are two entirely different things. There's absolutely no reason a person shouldn't do both. I see no hypocrisy here at all. It's not unusual for soldiers to disagree personally with the president. They're people just like anyone else, and they each have their opinions, as they should. That in no way means they can or should ever disobey orders. When called to duty, they serve, period.
In the 90's I had an office near a college where the army sent a lot of their young officer candidtates to school. They were allowed and encouraged to take part time jobs, so I ended up with a number of them working for me. I remember one kid in particular, a tank platoon leader, who hated Bill Clinton with a passion. He was incredibly vocal about it any time a conversation would turn political. He was thrilled to tell anyone who would listen all about his disdain for President Clinton and his policies, especially ones that concerned the military. However, his respect for and loyalty to Commander In Chief Clinton was unflinching. It wouldn't occur to him for a second to disobey an order or to hesitate when called to serve, whatever his personal views were. He was a soldier, and as such his duty came first. That's what soldiers do. There is no choice; there is no question. That's just what they do.
The person whose "logic and motivation" are in question is the republican kid. Besides they obvious hypocrisy and cowardice of his being all gung ho war, ra ra ra, while never even dreaming of going to fight it himself, his attitude on the issue of his political opponent's service is disgustig and pathetic. He's using the soldier's requirement to follow orders as an opportunity to forward his own political voice, trying to invent some kind of impropriety where none exists. He makes it out like the soldier could just up and decide not to obey, simply because he personally disagrees. Soldiers can't do that. That's not how it works.
The really sad part is that this young republican thinks anyone is dumb enough to buy what he's dishing out. Even sadder is that he's probably right. The ignorant, judgemental, and uninformed seem to outnumber the insightful at least 10-1 these days, and they'll believe just about anything as long as it's been repeated enough times. Sad, sad, sad.
