I used to have cable, then moved to a small town where the main event is the inbred festival. Thus I had to get DSL because they didn't have cable. I find my DSL (sbc yahoo) intercepts my mail alot. I'll be emailing a friend back and forth then suddenly I stop getting them and they show up then next day in my inbox. I'm in search of a better provider or service. Is there a way to get faster service than cable? What is it and how does one get it?

If you have endless sources of money you can call a backbone provider and have them lay a T1 line to your house. From there you can resell fractional services to local community members to help offset costs.

If you don't, you may as well marry your sister and go to the festival, sorry.

absolutely depends on what you're using it for and your local area. Some service plans restrict the ability to run servers and/or don't give out static addresses, things like that. Basically you're going to have to research and ask around.

From my own personal experience I know the quality of service of cable CAN be better than DSL but sometimes it is not. Some people like to run web servers and stuff and don't have a problem while others have their service terminated with no refund for the month due to contract violation. So, yeah, find out what's good in your area by asking the local yocals.

My SBC works like a charm. But I did something different. I NEVER set up my sbc email account. I use gmail (yes, I know) and sometimes an old hotmail account. I also don't have any "toolbars" (hah) installed or any spyware. I try to flush as much of the peripheral software down the toilet since it's mostly marketing-driven crap.

The best kind of ISP is the one you don't have to pay for.
