I do, 'cause it means that someone's going to say something and you're not just standing around staring at each other.

I would prefer if the mouth opened like in there.com

Many new players think its stupid to type in the air.. and that typing noise sucks lol

I like it. Its a visual clue that someone is trying to say something.

I hate AO and other animations that do not allow you to type or let your head freely follow your mouse.

I like the cue the typing animation gives, but I'm less than amazed at the typing animation itself; I keep wanting to (but putting it off) add an override for either an "arm gesturing" animation, or to simulate the mouth opening and closing with the built-in SL face animations.

I like it. It serves its purpose well.

Something like the mouth opening would be too subltle. Unless you're looking right at someone's face, you'd miss it.

The sound is very useful as well. It serves very well as a cue when you're too focused on what you're doing to notice that someone's about to say something. Without the sound, it's really easy to miss the text on the screen. As soon as you hear it though, it's an instant wakeup call to widen your focus and pay attention to what's happening with other people, and not just with what you yourslef are doing.

All in all, I think SL's person to person com system is excellent.

I like the typing anim and sound, too. It's be nice to have different styles of typing, though. I use the venerable Hunt N' Peck style, for instance. Granted, such a style would look foolish without a little floating keyboard.. But who cares? ^.^

I find this is particularly important since we don't have particle swirls after hitting Enter like in 1.5 anymore.

Has anyone created a TO—a Typing Overrider to substitute your own animations? I'd like one of a mad conductor of some symphorock orchestra band, that'd crack me up. Or yeah... as Caleb points to... something closer to the way I REALLY type, with two fingaz and thumbs on space... hehehe...

Many of the floating keyboard attachments could be made into an overrider without much work. Also, Web Page's "mood mixer" includes a "chat override" function for animation.

I'd like it more I think if there was a "..." above someones head when they were typing, with a toggle on off for the sound.. But thats just me..

Hmmm... thanx for the info! I'd like to see this done! Typing Overrider sounds so obvious, yet it is not more common.

(This does not surprise me tho.)

I don't mind the animation. The typing sound, in my opinion, is more important. At times when I think I'm alone, the typing sound lets me know that someone else is near.

The typing is really annoying, especially if I don't get to hear the dialogue.

While I'm working on a building, I hear
*CLICKCLICKCLACKETYCLACK*
and realize someone is saying something nearby...
and wait for the text...
"............................................"
and wait some more...
"............................................"
What, no text? Then why can I hear the typing?

There is obviously a double standard going on here.

I really, REALLY, want a way to turn off the typing sound. I'm typically listening to music (streamed on my land, or from a club, or playing Torley's music in iTunes, whatever).

But most importantly, the clicky-sound interrupts the sound in movie playback, which has made MST3K nights at the Elbow Room difficult.

The animation's amusing, and is logically correct for SL: it's not first life, typing is how we communicate, with nice clean pure electrons, we don't gape our meaty lips open and wheeze air through a tube of meat to produce some kind of wet slapping meat noise like DISGUSTING MEAT CREATURES. (google Terry Bisson Meat if you don't get it.)

I like the typing. It maps perfectly to what the puppeteer is doing.

We want everyone to have fun at our MST3K: The Home Game events at the Elbow Room. The best I can offer is to mention in the event notecard that audience participants might try to preface their humorous comments with a /-slash as that prevents the "typety-typety" sound. Not a perfect solution by any means as not everyone will do it or do it consistently, but it's the best I can offer. Thanks for your input as feedback is always greatly appreciated.

I love the typing, that's one thing that attracted me to stay in SL when I was a newbie.
And the lil sounds it makes is great too. I'd never get rid of it.
I think it's cute and effective as it lets you know someone is going to say something.
As much as I love to feel I am *really* IN SL, I think it feels more comfy to have an image of someone "typing".... Because hey, we still exist in RL and that IS what we're doing, right!

As for the people saying mouth opening would be better, my opninion is: CREEEEPY! :O
I think that if they changed it to that, and didn't give us the choice of turning it off, I'd quit.

I don't mind that much. For example, in Project Entropia, when you type your character spews out total gibberish, like "Malapete oopate? No, no shnivili, no no no..." It's not like we should use text-to-speech or anything (yet that'd be quite nifty... at least if we're speaking English), but it's good to signal that you're about to say something.

Upon more thinking, one of my bigger problems is how text comes out in clumps, line-by-line. There isn't a finer granularity. I wish I could see text come out character-by-character, or at least word-by-word. I know this is a concern for some but I like the "water flowing" aspect, since it'd contribute to realtime communication and being able to avoid cutting in on each other.

That's one of the good things I picked up from There.

Some like the typing animation, some don't... the solution... maybe add an option in the preferences somewhere so that those that do not like the animation/sound can turn it off and those that do like it can keep it enabled? I'd be satisfied with that... =)

A 'moving mouth' cue would be useless for those of us who have 'furry' Avatars that use full-head or partial head masks to make us look like various animal anthroforms. You can't see the Avatar's real mouth in most of those forms.

Still, I don't care for the typing action. I'd rather see a small 'word balloon' appear near the person, and vanish again when they stop typing.

As for the sound effects? I keep my sound turned off, thanks.
