From the Wired article: From: Wired According to recent research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, I've only a 50-50 chance of ascertaining the tone of any e-mail message. The study also shows that people think they've correctly interpreted the tone of e-mails they receive 90 percent of the time. ... The reason for this is egocentrism, or the difficulty some people have detaching themselves from their own perspective, says Epley. In other words, people aren't that good at imagining how a message might be understood from another person's perspective. If you think this post is about you, you have a 50% chance of being right.

Yeah I read this a few days ago. Its actually very enlightening. I had recently sent an email to a co-worker, as well as someone I thought was a close friend, and the entire email was taken out of context because I started the email with "Hey you!".....it was totally meant in a chummy and friendly manner, yet she read it as being condescending and wasn't too happy about it. Errors on both our parts as I see it now....me for being "egocentric" per the article and assuming (we all know what happens when one assumes) she knew the tone I had intended, and her for being a paranoid, over-sensitive nutjob.

It isn't about me. It's about: http://img.timeinc.net/time/magazine/archive/covers/1978/1101780703_400.jpgAm I right? From: Queenie Extraordinare Yeah I read this a few days ago. Had your friend written "Hey, you," I imagine the response might have been a tad more warm. Commas, my friends, commas.

I think some flames are started on purpose, by people who enjoy making other people angry, or making other people sad, or who just enjoy seeing people get riled up about something they could make go away by looking at a different page.
I think people target specific people and make note of what upsets them and tailor their flames posts so as to obtain maximum aggravation with minimum posting effort.
I think some flame starters probably do things like look at sites like alt.flames and study topics and techniques used in the most virulent and hateful threads and adopt them for their own use.

I honestly can't name a single person in our forums who might put this kind of commitment into trolling. It's more likely that they do it by the seat of their pants and happen to be unfortunately talented at it.
