About half the time, I just buy new socks instead of washing them. I figure that with all the money I'm saving on washing and drying them, I can afford to buy new ones.

I air dry all my clothes. I wash them all by hand... except when I jump in the shower with them on.
Then it's not really by hand as much as by body.

How many weeks do you wear the socks before buying new ones?

I have forgone clothing altogether; it does tend to make people on airplanes uncomfortable for some unfathomable reason, until I explain to them that it is motivated by concern for the environment what with clean water and detergents and also my concern for Asian garment workers who work in circumstances long outlawed in earlier industrialized nations. Once they see the compelling logic of my concern for the planet they usually are pretty impressed that I'm so altruistic.

I'm considering giving up food shortly to further minimize my environmental impact.

Because I have to wash my sheets and bedding in hot water to kill those little dust mite guys since I'm allergic to them.

This thread should really be mentioned in your next "Brain and Behavior" seminar.

in the summer i hang stuff up outside to dry after washing in a washing machine using no phosphates or whatever. I have a hard time finding detergent that just smells like soap and not like a perfumery got set loose in my jeans, but once I do it's all downhill from there.

when it is winter and -40 outside, I do not hang the clothes up but use the ancient dryer that will probably blow up and burn the house down one day. (I swear it is as old as I am or nearly.)

When they walk to the laundry hamper on their own they're ripe enough.

I wear them for a day. Sometimes two if I only wore them for a couple of hours. I try to go barefoot as much as possible when I'm at home or within running distance of home.

I can't stand the constraints of fabric or footwear on my feet for very long.
