This is the second weekend in a row where some idiot releases a plague upon SL and "POOF" we are all restricted to wait.
Here's an interesting topic.
How do we stop this form of hacking without restricting SL's open endedness?!
I am all for weapons in SL ( I love shooting a person here and there), but shutting down the grid? ... rediculous. Crashing a Sim is also unacceptable.
I wonder what the Linden's have in store in these situations.
F.B.I.?
What happens if some poor scripter just screws up really bad when testing something?
I know that this scenario is highly unlikely, but it is possible considering the open ended world that SL is.
Just some things to think about.

There is no self-replicate function; it has to be down deliberately. And even if you did mess up, why would you have made an object that self replicates *and* moves between sims? If you can do that you can code in safeguards.

You cant really stop the greifing, esspessialy when they lag out the server. like you said; "its an open ended world" however LL is not going to ban Nukes. and no matter what greifers will always think of another crasher.. the solution? since you cannot fight greifing, you might as well fight it. if someone threatins, cage, and report. if someone puts down a nuke. terminate them before they can say "321 destroy" and turn off the bomb. if you are in a sand box, simply sit down. thats all. problem is LL does not always go for the filed report, and when they do they dont do anything. once i was trapped in a trap where you couldnt rez or TP out. i reported to LL, and i just reported for hours, and they never responded. another time my friend was playing on his alt, and he nuked a dance club. you know what LL did to him? they gave him a link to the sand box, and it was done! go to www.slexchange.com and get anti greifing tools, or i/m me

Unless there's some kind of hard coded safeguard (there probably is a few things preventing it), it could happen by accident pretty easily--two words: buggy recursion. (not the part about moving between sims so easily)

WTF is C3PO supposed to be USEFUL for anyway, besides whining? Stupid piece of scrap metal would be more useful recycled as a toaster. But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS!

My zombies had safeguards built into them that limited their replications to 14 per sim's breadth. They posed almost no risk to the grid whatosever, and even had several Lindens look over the code prior to releasing them. The first Grey-goo attack I can remember was Ezhar Fairlight's fish episode way back in 1.0. That was completely accidental, though, but it DID utilize a user-ownership bug and whatnot. He was very sorry

Makes sense, though.

I gotta say, it's pretty fun to have higher authority.
I bet you'd use hacks if you had them.

Something also worth considering is how some griefers will trick newbies into using such weapons. When I first started, there was a lot of people giving free items, like clothes and accessories and various things. One of them though gave an item called 'bubble gum fun' or something like that. I didn't know what it did until after I used it, so I got suspended for it. I tried to contact LL about it but they apparently didn't care, seeing as how they never responded to my emails or my phone calls. It wasn't that big of a deal to me, since it was only three days. But I can only imagine that such things would tick off a lot of potential customers. I'm not trying to gripe about LL or anything, I just think that some things should be considered when labeling something as griefing.
