Can someone please 'splain to me why it takes my bank 14 nanoseconds to let a merchant mischarge my card, and 3-5 days to give the money back after the merchant runs the credit?
I'll be over in the corner eating crackers and ketchup if someone would like to drop by with an answer.

No idea the context here, but my guess is it's because there are 3 parties involved.
You, the merchant & the bank. Banks have automated much for merchants so things can be processed automatically. If there is an error, I'm guessing a human at the bank and merchant will need to be involved. Human involvement in tangled transactions takes more time than three computers talking. hmmm, it must also depend on your bank's policies. this has happened to me 3x, and my bank immediately credited my account. depeding on the time of day, i might have to wait until the next business day for the money to be posted, but the transaction was entered immediately.
