What I find astonishing is how blind some politicians are to the lessons of history.

While I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment Selador, I don't find it in the least bit astonishing. It's exactly how I expected our wonderful government to act. They should be pulled up before a war crimes tribunal for even thinking it though.

No I'm not joking. As a disabled Vet of this current fiasco I am telling you the USA and UK are the only people who even remotely play by the rules set out in Geneva Convention. This is all I intend to say on the matter.

And even those two don't really... apart from "lip service". But even if we're the only ones even looking at the Geneva convention, that's no reason to get rid of it. In the end, it's what seperates the goodies from the badies.

I'll remind you that all of those charged in the Abu Ghraib scandal are currently serving time. Is that 'lip service'? I know I said I wouldn't comment further, but being a combat veteran of 3 different conflicts rather gives me an inside perspective.

I'll readily agree that not many countries that do go to war, do pay any attention to the geneva conventions.

But before canning it outright, a viable alternative should be agreed upon.

Yes. They should be serving time, but that was just one thing amongst many. I know there are a lot of good people out there fighting, so I don't mean to disrespect them... but amongst the good are a lot of bad apples too. And let's face it, it's our governments that are the worst of the lot.
