Who is More Evil: Videogame Systems

After a discussion in the forums last night about what video-game console one should or shouldn't buy and why, I thought I'd poll the general public to see what the general attitude on the subject is.

Check whose video game console you would not buy because of the company's reputation. You can select more than one company.

Darn, should have read the post first. If I knew I could vote for more than one, Sony is a close second.

You forgot a major competitor in the modern console market..... the return of the ORIGINAL contender. I'll guarantee it's gonna be like Rocky coming out of retirement.... again. Make no mistake, Atari is an unchained demon with this one.

Excellent! I had not seen that new hardware. My family still has their original Atari 2600 hooked up to the TV.

I still have an Atari 2600 as well., its in storage at the moment.

The only other main video game hardware company currently is Nokia, which competes in the handheld market against Sony and Nintendo, though not well, with their N-Gage system. It has a surprising number of games available for it:

Atari is an evil company that uses multimillion dollar Hollywood licensing deals to create big budget video games that leave independent game developers out in the cold. They create compelling content to increase sales for Microsoft (pc monopoly), Sony (DRM trojan horse CD's), and Nintendo (they finally committed a crime and made Zelda an FPS). Atari also displays no value for human life with games filled with violence and no respect for the Game Developers Bill of Rights.

Nah, I'm just joking... evil? Come on, what are you W.? Pre-emptive boycotts maybe?

I think the game divisions of all of these companies are on the up and up. Even if J. Allard looks like an alien.

I guess Nintendo could be considered evil for not supporting HD in the upcoming game console, thus slighting the tech savvy and rewarding luddites.


But that new controller looks freaking cool.

The new controller, especially with that boomerang attachment worries me. Given that they'll have their entire old library available, I'm supposed to play Super Mario with that wee little stick? I can feel the hand cramps already.

What you said about Atari goes double for Electronic Arts? Now that's real evil.

I've actually heard terrible things about EA. I recall they work their employees as if they were in a sweatshop.

It's sad: some of the best titles in the video game industry come out of EA... but they do it in part by buying smaller companies.

I had that kind of thing happen to a company I worked for: we were all about the customer when we were independent, but when we got bought by a larger corporation (for good reason; I support the reasons the owners sold out), it was suddenly all about the profit. We were told "we need to be profitable to maintain our independent management".

It sounds to me like EA is kind of doing what Microsoft is doing: they buy competitors, squeeze the last dime they can out of their product, then kill it when the new "improved" version is so horrible and bloated that nobody will buy it.

Having said that, some of my favorite games (especially sports games) say "EA" somewhere on the box.

err i cant vote on that - i collect consoles and computers so id buy em all! - (xbox - ps1 n 2 - nin nes snes n64 gb pgb cgb gc - sega master system 1n2 megadrive 1n2 megacd 1n2 gamegear dreamcast and various olduns - oh yeah 5 pcs and 2 laptops atthemo - others wanted!)

Repeat after me. I can be a whole person without purchasing everything related to (insert your item). I do not need the entire seven year DVD set of (insert your show) to be satisfied. I will use my time and money for something worthwhile instead of wasting it on (insert obsession).

I would say Sony, but I love my PSP too much

Reputations be damned. I don't buy any video game systems because my money goes into SL land tier.
