This Indonesian volcano is starting to erupt, giving off toxic gases and some ash right now as the lava dome prepares to implode. 11,000 people have been evacuated so far. It's billed as the world's "most active and dangerous" volcano.

So I looked up the lat/long coords and plugged them into Google Earth. If you have vertigo, don't look :) This is so impressive ... check out the trail of smoke going to the northwest.

I was told (here on the forums) that the images from Google Earth were 'years' old.

Any truth to that?

I'm not sure. All I know is that it's not realtime. So the satellite images could be days, weeks old or perhaps longer.

See if you can pull up your town and note any landmarks that are gone or not showing, that will give you some idea.

Even so...

It's true. I guess they'll update them whenever new data becomes available. It's easy to tell how old they are by looking down at your own house. The images of my area (UK) were 5 years old. I knew this because I could see myself trying to mug the old lady down a alley near my house. She turned out to be a martial arts expert and totally kicked my face in. If I zoom in real close, I can see my teeth on the floor.

I wonder if the age of the maps depends on whether you have the "pay for it" version or the free one? I have the "free" one and the maps are about 2-5 yrs old.

back to the original image..

is it just me or does that image look like what a meteor would look like if it were coming from below the crust instead of outerspace???

oh.. and Starax.. they were such nice teeth.. sorry to hear about the martial arts lady. you know what they say.. "never judge a book by its cover" or as we say here "that nice old lady in-world may just be a martial arts expert in RL".

:D
