The Imperial Order, a World of Warcraft guild on the Detheroc server, is holding the server hostage. The guild has completed the various quests needed to obtain a septer used to ring a gong. Ringing the gong will open the gates giving everyone on the server access to new content, but the guild refuses to do it. At least, they refuse to do it until someone pays them 5,000 gold.

They say they’d rather be known as the obnoxious guild that held their server hostage than forgotten as the kind guild that opened new content.

Funny. Really. The kind of thing I'd do, if I played MMOs.

This is also the server that had all the racist posts in their forums. So I am guessing it is a server of asshats.

The amount of work it takes for a guild to complete the quests to open the gate, they should get paid. I mean we are talking hours and hours and hours and hours to gather the rep and complete a series of quests, not to mention all the work everyone has to do to gaather supplies. It really doesn't matter if they don't open it. Blizz will open all the gates on all the servers soon enough.

Also, 5,000 Gold is a pretty low randsom. I would set it at 50,000 Gold, but I guess they aren't greedy.

I would disagree. I mean, if they want to do this, fine, but I don't buy that anyone SHOULD pay them.

Well no one has to pay them. Another guild on the server can spend all the hours grinding the rep, complete the quests and open the gates. They did it first, and they refuse to open them and that is their right.

We had a quest at Christmas time to rescue a Reindeer who was being held hostage for ransom. I completed a quest recently to get the key to Scholo and I had to pay a dwarf NPC 15G to bribe him to give me the next part of the quest (this is all built in the quest) so it isn't like ransom is a foreign concept to the game.

I love the emergent behavior of virtual worlds. WoW is one of those places where players take the game designers by suprise and reverse the rules. The great WoW infection is a great example of this.
