That at an investment meeting at a luxury resort with Fortune 500 investors was treated to a 30 minute or so presentation on Second Life, the metaverse concept, and the cash potential in such an environment within the last few days

for the topics and investments and participants, the fact that Second Life got so much play is a good sign

The gentleman doing the presentation mentioned a meeting with (possibly Philip, I was not there for the presentation, 2nd hand info) who told him the current status of the grid is not good, so rather than band aid the unstable system, the whole shebang is being redeveloped from the ground up. That might explain Havok, html on a prim and all those other goodies we have been waiting for, and might be the most fundamental lesson learned from the Wells Fargo debacle, explaining limitations up front so as not to disappoint later

(incidently, a few weeks ago I worked the Wells Fargo convention. One of my jobs was to put together Elton Johns Piano. Yes, they had Elton John play thier party for about 2000-3000 of them, reportedly to the tune of some 2 million cash. Yes it was Elton, I watched the show from backstage. Moral of the story, next time get more cash from the big fish people. If they paid 2 million for a 90 minute show for their employees, they would pay more then 11k for developmental work. Bid high, negotiate lower if needed!)

This Second Life info was secondhand from a very good friend who attended the presentation. I really can't go into any more details as to sources or company names involved.

He used to laugh at me for playing SL, now he is trying to figure out a way to monetize the platform. He rushed over to finally check out our place, Mars Hotel. Whatever was said in that meeting, it was very motivating. If the people in that room were as motivated as my friend, this is possibly very good news. I am also stoked that the issues that seem to linger and inhibit my enjoyment of the platform may be quietly being rendered extinct behind the scenes at LL.

also mentioned was a staunch refusal to sell the SL platform, as many offers from many big names have been denied. or at least that is what LL is telling people. I can not verify any of this, mind you, this is strictly the rumor mill for all intents and purposes, but I am confident in what my source told me

cross your fingers

Would that be the birdy that Dick Cheney shot? Ok ok, those are getting old, but..

Woo-hoo for more Anshes? (For the record: I don't hate Anshe.)

sadly, i didn't include this part, but real estate was prolly the #1 point discussed

so you might be right on the money and Anshe better watch her back

hopefully for her, she was cataloguing all her experiences, because she might soon have MUCH more well funded competition

if she is as smart and shrewd as alleged, she will be ready for the fight

I read the word "monetize" and have now come out in hives.

What I'm interested in is, what were these investors interested in investing in? LL itself? Land within SL? Companies saying "we're going to use SL as a platform for something"? Sounds from what you say as if it would be land, in which case, terrific - a load of people coming on purely to make money on property speculation who already know the tricks.

This thread seems horribley On-Topic for SL and seems to be cluttering up the Off-Topic forum.

Reminds me of something Stephen King said after he published "Riding the Bullet" on the Internet; he kept getting businessmen coming up to him when he travelled who didn't give a damn about the story, but just the fact that he showed them a new way to make money. After all, actually reading stories is something the walking wallets, the consumers do, or maybe the wifey.

I've never had any objections to making money, but I'll be damned if I understand that mindset.

If LL sold SL as a platform allowing individuals to setup and host their own sims which would show up on the main grid would be great. I know I would run my own server(s).

My guess would be private venture developments off the grid. A company could do 3-D, interactive training and save themself a bundle. Or, since porn drives the internet, I can think of at least one very profitable application for a private venture, off the grid.

Wasn't Philip quoted somewhere that he doesn't believe in rewrites? Anyhow, there are indices that LL is indeed working on some other project. Perhaps we'll know after the townhall.

I don't think it would matter if he didn't believe in re-writes. It might be something that they have to do to get SL running better.

he repeatedly said something along the lines of "second lifes economy is on par (or greater) than Cubas economy"
