Poor logic knows no partisanship. Anyone can use it. I see poor logic used on both sides of debates, often. Rush Limbaugh (certainly not a liberal or feminist) once confessed (this was in the early 90s, 1992 or 1993 I think) to a Time Magazine interviewer that sometimes he would select a statistic not from an actual source, but because it sounded right. !!! That goes beyond poor logic into the realm of actual lying, but you catch my drift. People from all argumentative views make use of such common logical fallacies as
Ad Hominen fallacy (personal attack) targets the actual person who holds an opinion rather than the opinion itself. Begging the Question (what is true is true) asks the audience simply to accept a statement as the truth when in actuality it is controversial (a common tactic of Kiamat's actually). Post hoc ergo prompter hoc (after this, therefore because of this) falsely assumes a cause and consequence relationship just because one event happened after another Non Sequitor (it does not follow) examples provided in posts above Sweeping generalizations (juping to conclusions) overstates truth and exaggerates (such as the overstatement in the original post of this thread and the misinformed logic behind the auto-generation engine itself) The False Dilemma (either-or) fallacy, imagining only and no more than two sides or solutions to an issue and ignoring all possible other truths (I brought an example of this to light in the death penalty thread). Now that we look at the most common logical fallacies, how many do you think have been committed commonly by people in these forums? And were those in error on only one side of the argument? Didn't think so. _____________________

Some good answers so far. We think that globular clusters formed at around the same time as the galaxy itself, so the gas from which its stars formed would not have had many heavy elements. It's likely the gas had been enriched by ~1 generation of stars (perhaps Population III stars). Since the time of their formation, many stars in globular clusters have either exploded (supernovae) or ended their lives as a white dwarf. Although both of these processes will have enriched the small amount of gas within and near the globular cluster, the already formed stars will not accumulate any (or, at least, a negligible amount of) further heavy elements.
Most of the stars that remain in globular clusters today are of relatively low mass -- the majority less massive than our sun. Although some of them will be burning helium in their cores (and, in fact, these are among the brightest stars in globular clusters), the majority will not have yet created metals. As franz pointed out, the few that have formed metals will not be able to transport them to their surface where we can see them. The stars with the lowest masses, which are the longest-lived, will probably never even create significant numbers of elements heavier than helium in their core. As for your last question, you're right, the majority of the remaining stars will never end their lives as supernovae. Most will end up as a white dwarf. There is, however, a very tiny fraction of stars in globular clusters that will have recently accreted mass from a binary companion and settled onto the main sequence as short-lived massive stars. Many of these stars, which are called "blue stragglers", will eventually explode in a supernova. _____________________
