"Someone close to clark will die" tonight. Who do you think it will be?
The network has been floating false scripts around for months to dispel any spoilers. All signs are that no one outside of production knows who's gonna get the axe tonight. Even if you think you know, you're probably wrong, so anyone care to bet?
We know it can't be Lex or Lois, since they're intergral to the Superman story in the future. That leaves Lana, Martha, Johnathan, & Chloe. My money's on either Johnathan or Lana. I know, those seem pretty obvious, but I'm gonna explain my logic anyway.
Johnathan's of course the most obvious choice since we know Clark's father has to die at some point. It's canon. This would of course end the ridiculous senate race plot line right in the middle though, and I'm not sure what the point would have been for the race to exist in the first place if they were planning to kill Johnathan now. Also, it would make all the mystery and hype kind of disappointing since we know Mr. Kent has to start pushing up Kansas daisies realtively soon anyway. At this point, Clark's a little past the age where he should have left for his space odyssey suer hero training with Jorel.
I really think it's gonna be Lana. Indications at the end of last week's show were that Clark's finally decided to tell her what every badguy within a thousand miles and half of his close freinds have already found out, "Honey, I'm an alien." Since clearly the writers want to go on needlessly torturing poor Clark, it seems fitting that the episode in which he tells her will be the one in which she conveniently bites the dust. At least we won't have to worry about her getting knocked unconscious 3/4 of the way through every episode anymore. That poor girl must have more dain bramage than Rocky Balboa at this point after all those weekly concussions.
We already know Lex is in love with Lana, and we've already been shown that the mere possibility of her death is enough to drive him to unspeakable acts of evil. I think Lana's death tonight will be the final straw that drives Lex into official badguy-hood. Lex will probably find a way to blame Clark for it, and vise versa, thus cementing them as arch enemies for all time. Behind every good badguy is dead woman, right? It's a tale as old as time. If it was good enough for Darth Vader, surely it's good enough for Lex Luthor.
Besides, we've hardly seen much of Lana this season anyway, so it's not like making her absense permanent would be very difficult to write in.
Of course, it could be Chloe, but we've all seen her die a couple times before, so it would be a bit tired if it were her. She's got to go sooner or later though since we all know it's Lois, not Chloe, who will become the Daily Planet's star reporter. There doesn't seem to be any easy way to turn Lois into a real person, so maybe Chloe's death will be the driving force that causes Lois to develop a talent other than modeling bikinis for Aquaman.
Who knows though. Maybe they'll bring back Pete at the last minute and let him take one for the team. We'll have to wait & see.
DISCLAIMER - Yes, I realize I bashed some characters and some plot points in this post, but I do love Smallville. Some of the writing is really cheezy, but hey, that's television, and the WB won't ever allow a show without it.

LOL, well I'm pretty sure. But it seems pretty obvious. I mean she's the only one never in any later incarnation of superman (aside from the dog) and she already half joined the dark side. And she knows about clark. And her replacement is already available.

Got friends that like Smallville, but the only episodes I've seen were pretty poo. My friends said they weren't particularly good ones, but it's never on when I want some TV (or there's something else on ) so I had to go for the "pie" option. Though it was mostly so I could make a comment on what a poor superhero I feel Superman is. I mean, come on... almost totally invunerable? Very little character to speak of? It's only because he's so iconic that he's still about. Okay, to be fair, he's been treated (I feel) pretty badly and with little imagination. But still, would it kill the scriptwriters to make it a bit deeper? Give the guy more actual moral dilemmas rather than having him have to just try really hard to save two people at once? <some kinda disclaimer that I've also never read the comics goes here >

From: Paolo Portocarrero Drat! Without spoiling, not what I expected, at all. Same here. I'll wait to comment further until enough time has gone by for the West coast people to have seen the show. All I will say for now is that I'm not sure how to feel about how right or wrong my initial predictions actually were.

Was it Lana? I hope it was.
I stopped watching a while ago, it was just waaay too stupid. Why did he ever go for her over Chloe? Dumbest writers ever.

I suppose it's late enough on both coasts to spill the beans. It was Jonathan Kent -- the only redeeming character on the show, besides Martha, and she barely gets any screen time. I agree, Lianne - the last few seasons' plot lines have gone to the dark side. I watched seasons 1 - 3 religiously, but now, I've all but lost interest. Tonight's 100th episode was just a ratings ploy to boost SV's ailing ratings. Maybe they'll ressurrect Jonathan so at least we have some "real man" eye candy to watch. Heck, why not? Half of the cast has died on one or more occasions and lived to tell about it.

He'll probably be back, because in the current Superman comic books he is still alive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_KentDon't you just love the Wikipedia P.S. But of course when they put it on TV the writers like to play with the history some.

Further Spoiler Alert
01-26-2006 21:02
In point of fact, it was Lana first, then not Lana anymore, then Lois but not really, then Johnathan. So, when I said "Lana or Johnathan," I was right and wrong on both counts.
If anyone who missed it would like the details, first Lana got creamed by school bus. Clark then used some funky Kryptonian mojo to turn back time so he could save her. Later, they gave a lame, half-assed attempt at making us believe Lois had been electrocuted to death for about 5 seconds before ending with Johnathan's more or less unspectacular heart attack.
I disagree, by the way, Paolo, that Johnanthan was a "redeeming character". I always thought his lines were incredibly sappy, and way over-acted. Still, it was a stretch for Bo Duke to be expected to pull off anything believably besides Bo Duke, so I gotta give him some credit I guess. I do agree with you though, that we probably haven't seen the last of him. I'm sure he'll be back in some form or another to personify Clark's conscience from time to time.
If you want to talk worthwhile characters, I think Lionel Luthor takes the cake. John Glover has never ceased to play the role brilliantly, and the humanity his added presence in the story gives to Lex was a stroke of genius by the show's creators. They obviously put a lot of thought into what kind of a parent would be required to sire a super villain, and they delivered nicely.
I think Lex himself seserves a lot of credit as well. Granted, they sometimes dumb him down a bit more than they should, but as I said earlier, there's no getting around the mandatory dose of teeny bopper crap in every show on the WB. You just have to take that for what it is, and ignore it accordingly. Overall, Lex is portrayed very well as a man standing on the line between good and evil, tyring desperately to decide which way to step. With each season he gets just a little bit darker, and the process is a lot of fun to watch.
Anyway, I wish it had been Lana that had died. Beside the fact that she's been pretty annoying the last couple seasons, her death would have added a whole new dimension to the relationship between Clark and Lex, and it would have forever dismissed the almost embarrassingly cliched "why doesn't he just tell her" moments we all have to sit through every week. Further, it would have allowed for the development of the Lois & Clark relationship, which is of course where things should be going. As it is, Lana's presence really doesn't add much to the story, except to stagnate it.

arg, damnit, that sucked... this show frusterates the hell out of me.
should have been chloe. play with the history a little but launa is alive in one of the movies, and Jonathen kent is around in the comics. And of course killing lois even trying to make us think she's dead is just stupid.

Haha, good synopsis, Chosen! I pretty much totally agree. I just love John Schneider, though. He is dreamy and he's the dad archetype I always wished I had, myself. Yeah, the whole Lana/Lois plot line should have been further exploited with Lana's death, and then an eventual romantic tug-of-war between Clark and Lois, causing Chloe to finally melt down and join the Luthor Corp. dark side (again). In terms of acting, yeah, John Glover is the only "real" actor on the series. Clark is just eye candy for the gay demographic, Lana is eye candy for the teen demographic, and Bo is eye candy for the nostalgia crowd. Sorry for the spoilers, Lord -- I didn't realize the series is that far delayed in the UK. Sowwy.

He probably will stay dead since it appears he is dead in the "Superman Returns" movie coming out later this year: http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&id=1807839024&cf=pg&photoid=603114&intl=us

I read a comic once where far far in the future, launa has become pretty much immortal and a sorceress (which has started in smallville) and she and clark do finally get together. Maybe the writers read the same comic.

Don't get me wrong; Clark ain't hard to look it, nor is the new aqua boy toy they added a few episodes, ago. But cold, dumb and vacant eye candy is not nearly attractive as rugged, warm-hearted "real men" like Jonathan.
