Gah.

Now I have to actually dig up a 3D package though to clean up my avatar...

Cool!

What's OGLE, and how does one take their avatar and create a 3d file with it?

Interesting markup:

http://www.lasercrystalworks.com/crystal.htm

VOLUME DISCOUNTS

20 units
-20%
50 units
-35%
100 units
-42%
200 units
Call

KEY CHAIN

Round KC (1.25" Dia. x .5";)
22.50
Rectangle, Lighted
(1.25" x 1.5" x .25";)
32.50
Round, Lighted (1.25" Dia x .5";)
32.50

My guess, they are seeing a 70% markup if they really bought in quantity, ground the wholesaler. That's probably 10$ per keychain in material costs. Now, 49.99 may seem like pure profit, but then you have labour that goes into that. Setting up the preview, dealing with unhappy customers. I'd throw in another 20$ .. that's probably 30$ profit per item.

So, the printer goes for around 160K... I guess you need to markup somewhat. The maintenance fee on that baby is probably going to run your around 20K per year. So, you have sell 20K worth of markup to break even on that alone. Add another 10% interest, and that's 16K.

They're going to have to sell 2000 .. just to break even. *ouch*

They're probably getting time share on a system, would be my guess. So, probably, they are making 10$ profit per item.

They're not getting rich, but if it's just a side business, not bad.

You can probably get a used crystal engraving system for 10-30K

Also keep in mind unless you have a lot of prim accessories or whatever, you avatar is going to look like every other avatar for the most part. Without textures the SL manaquin looks like a smooth Barbie or Ken doll even though you are clothed, the subtle details are bump mapped (texture) and won't be visible either. On the other hand, prim based avatars like a Luskwood furry might look pretty good. Unfortunatly you will have to build it outside SL so you can create a file to send.

I've been documenting my experiments with OGLE and expect to be meeting with the programmer tomorrow. Feel free to check my blog and the OGLE forum for more information.

Uh, how is this off-topic? This is very much on-topic, as it relates to the very specific issue of getting physical versions of SL stuff.

I am going to hold out until they can make a 3D plastic model. I would prefer one w/ kung fu grip. That would be cool.

OK like this than...
Only with kung fu grip, or maybe a pull string that makes fart sounds. That would be cool.

Sorry. With all the profanity I've read lately, I completely forget.

More to the point however, what kind of plastic and process. There's many differents kinds of plastic (pvc, hdpe, pp, abs, san, etc etc). And there are many different kinds of process for creating plastic objects. Hence my request for specifics.

[edit: missed page 2. I guess nudity IS allowed.]

I really don't care what type of plastic/process. Kung fu grip is non negotiable however.
