Ok, you can't watch a geek-centric cable station for long without seeing one of those advertisements for the "ionic breeze" or some clone. Since I'm a nerd for high-tech toys and since cat hair and dander is a scourge in my house, I was wondering if these things actually do any good? Or, are they just an expensive gimmicky piece of junk?

I have one and the collection grills gets coated in dust and gunk pretty quickly, so it appears at least to be doing something right.

Geek-centric cable station??? We don't have that here. :)

Anyway, yes, they work. Even the tiny ones you put in the USB works. In a tiny room, of course.

Tip: Buy a sample from Hong Kong suppliers. Cheap as hell, and if it is any good, start importing and selling it. Prices are a steal. :)

Dang, that's what happens when you let your girlfriend borrow your computer to log in and check her account. That post above was mine.

Warning! Do not buy an ionic "air purifier".

They are in actuality ozone generators which have been shown to have "little potential to remove indoor air contaminants" and actually create ozone in excess of EPA limits. Please visit the EPA link below for a comprehensive scientific evaluation of these devices (read the bold text if you're just skimming). I've also included a link that talks about a recent Consumer Reports article that first outed these polluters and the lawsuit that followed (and was dismissed).

You are much much better off purchasing a HEPA air filter.

Ulrika is correct.
The "clean air smell" those things generate is, in fact, ozone (which isn't the healthiest thing in the world to be pumping into your house.)

ah ha! that's what I suspected. My "too good to be true" sense was out there, but yet my geek "ooh ah, technology" factor countered this. Thanks :)

Radicals are more likely to be sexually "loose", hence the libido factor :D

Thank you for posting this. I knew I had read somewhere many years ago that ionized air could be harmful.

I just got one of these this week after finding out recently I'm allergic to my two dogs.

Its a Whirlpool Whispure. Its large, its not cheap and even on low it makes a small breeze. I haven't slept or felt better in years.
