Ok so my dsl has been out at home since Wed and I thought I would be cool and try to get on SL with my Dial-up. What a joke that was. I turned every preference down that I could and it took me like 10 minutes to actually get in world. The interesting part is when I did get in, everything was already rezzed lol. So I'm standing there and I can turn around in circles just fine, but when I try to move forward, my av is like..um no. I get an IM and explain my sad situation and then I'm not getting anything back after awhile. So I make the bold move to attempt to go to my backyard for some odd reason. I eventually made it back there in like 15 minutes and I try to sit on my big flower and I end up floating in the air with my ankles and legs bent all crazylike. So as I am playing contortionist in my backyard, my sis Aces shows up and we chat for a few. I can see what she says and she can see what I say, but I can't see what I type on the screen. Then I'm not seeing any messages and I then make an unfortunate choice to stand up and I fly about a million feet up in the air, still in contortionist mode as if I am in the Cirque Du Soleil. Then I just logged cuz I was mad. Funtimes...
I really could use some pie.

Did you turn your bandwith all the way down? I used to be able to get around in SL with dialup (to a minimal extent of course) it may have changed with the most recent versions though.
Adjust your draw distance so that its at the minimum, if you're still having problems, go into the prefrences file (C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Second Life, look around for a settings.ini file) and set the draw distance range from 64 to 32. The prefrences screen doesn't let you go that low, but you can if you manually edit the file. It will seem like you're almost legally blind due to the fog, but you will probably be able to move around better. _____________________

yeah. I've had sub-dial up connections sometimes. I'd rarely see what I typed until several minutes later, I couldn't move, etc.

I convinced a very good friend of mine (Hi Calibris!) to join SL, unaware that it wasn't really compatible with dial-up. He was stuck on Orientation Island, unable to really move, for months and months. I felt so bad. But hey, it was a one-time fee for him, and by the time he finally moved to an area with broadband, he had 40k Lindens in his SL account from logging on periodically, so it wasn't all bad. He was really, really sick of talking to that parrot though.
