Here is a 30 min video that got passed around recently.....more of the same neatness, its really amazing what procedurals can do.

Yes!!! The video is amazing. This game is going to be a blast! Have you heard anything about release dates?

That's last year's GDC video isn't it? I'm supprised that's only just making the rounds, it's sooo cool. :D

There's gonna be versions on mobile devices too. I'm guessing they're gonna be able to play in the exact same universe as the full game thanks to the procedural aspect of it.

When I was a kid, I was addicted to Simcity, Simant, and Simearth on the super nintendo. I used to dream that someday Will Wright would make a game that did all of them, but I never figured he'd actually DO it.

The only problem I see with that game is it might be either a) too tedious, or b) too short to reach the end-game. I could see myself powergaming through the early parts and getting the UFO in like, 2 hours.

Doesn't matter, of course, I'll be buying it the day it comes out.

From some of the stuff I've read it looks like Will almost intends the UFO 'sandbox' section to be the bulk of the game. Of course, I could have misinterpreted it...

So, do we get to hang with other players of the game with this? Or just see their "creations"

As I understand it; just see their creations.

IIRC the universe you explore is partially populated by aspects of other people's universes on a peer to peer system. The way the data is stored means that a huge amount of stuff can be transfered between people very quickly.

When in General, most likely no one reported it. Frankly, I didn't care that it's in there. It gave me something interesting to think about. I've already told some friends in SL to check out the link.

I do wonder if SL could ever be this intuitive. The AV customization blew my mind. Like when the mouse moved over the body, you could see the skeleton inside. And the creatures movements were analyzed and chosen according to the overall physique.

Looks like the customization ... it's selecting vertices we cant see. Just looks so advanced compared to what we got here. And I wonder if the SL avatar will be improved on.

Aye. That's what happens when you get an awesome designer (Will Wright) and awesome coders (kids from the demoscene) and mix them together.

I'd guess it didn't get reported because it wasn't a dumb thread pissing people off.

As for SL getting that kind of customization: it's entirely possible to do, since the ideas spore is built on are all about creating stuff from minute amounts of data. But, somehow, I think LL are probably gonna concentrate on getting what they've got working properly before making any radical changes.

this could, quite possibly, be a really excellent game. I can't wait to try it.

I wonder what the hardware specs will be like. they did mention a procedural texture system that wasn't apparently in that video demo.

Dug out this link because I think it's an awesome example of what can be done with procedural generation (the big thing that lets Spore do what it does):

Yes indeed, that's one of the better examples of procedural stuff in practical use, although it's all over the demoscene.

The one downside to procedural things, I think, is doesn't it require a bit more work on the part of the CPU to work everything out? One reason I figure it might not be in SL or the like anytime soon...

What's procedural generation? He never really explained it, though I can't wait for this to come out. They just kept adding more and more and more stuff...

Like the end of the spaceship demonstration... that was fantastic.

Yeah, I thought about posting that nice one with all the sqiggly lines and radiosity (forget who it was by now) but thought .kkrieger would be more easily appreciated.

You're right about procedural stuff taking more CPU (it's only initially - once it's generated it can just sit in memory), but I reckon that if you just gave the generation spare cycles it's possible it might still be quicker than downloading full textures. I mean, all SL's geometry is procedural already.

Put simply, procedural generation is making stuff by running programs rather than reading the exact (or compressed) data for them from disk or memory. Both prims and speedtree are examples of it.

Point taken, although people would miss being able to make their own textures if you went all-procedural. Having it as an option... well, I know it's been mentioned before, but it WOULD be pretty cool.

I agree, it'd be stupid to make all things procedural in SL.

Procedural textures would totally rule though, especially if we could run them on the GPU. Being able to write procedural objects would be awesome too.

i've been looking forward to this game since.. well, however long it's been public knowledge.

it's so awesome to see the other half of what i've been day-dreaming about for over a decade.. i can only hope that someday we see some sort of integration of the two as a future update to SL.

ok, i have to stop thinking about it.. my brain is starting to overheat from the possibilities.
