So... since we can't post and bump our own threads etc etc, Lets abuse the rating system!

I see so many bad ratings for items that are totally awesome, what is wrong with some of you people? Does competition scare you that much?

Lets be adults and Rate FAIRLY! Can we be fair?? Is it possible?

we don't all have same tastes
12-05-2005 14:28
it's not because *you* think something is fabulous that we will all do!
i am not going to positive-rate something that i do not like, i am straight fair and honest.
if it's not my style but well done, ill give it 3. if i think it was lousy made, its either 1 or 2.
and in other cases well good, 4 or 5!! if you think we're being babies because we nega-rate, just because we're pissed we can't bump, well shoo! you are wrong. well i know in my case you are. and shoo to people who actually *do* rate just to be mean. i aint.
that's how it is. and i don't expect people to give me 4 or 5 stars. i want people to go with what they really think, not to kiss my butt. im not gonna cry lol...

my opinion :) feel free to have a different one.

I agree
12-05-2005 14:33
But it wasnt directed towards you, I been looking through the forums for the last hour and see some real nice quality stuff and it has 1-2 stars... that isnt very fair IMO.
And I honestly dont rate if it my "taste" or not, I rate on the quality of the item, but that is everyones right to decide how they base thier ratings, all I am asking is that people be consistent with thier voting ... I see some stuff that is made poorly and high priced with 4-5 stars... its just another popularity contest and it is very unfair to newer designers.
Since the forums became popst only I have seen so many new designers start posting here... I would hate to see them discouraged from that because they THINK others think they dont make anything worth quality... when that isnt the case...

Forums are NOTHING BUT a popularity contest...
12-05-2005 15:08
Even now with rating it's still about who can kiss who's ass the best and who's more popular then the rest. Granted it has gotten ALOT better now that people can't reply and bump.

I am a new designer and have posted all of my items on the forums only to watch my post go down the drain because I'm not "popular enough" for comments or replys. And I know damn well my stuff has been better then alot that I see posted on the forums, not saying my things are the best. This has really discouraged me to post on the forums and it almost makes me sick to look and watch all the ass kissing and yes im talking about ratings as well. Agian it all comes down to what your name is. :)

And it's a shame but it STILL is that way if you ask me even with the rating system.
I rate what I think is quility work and I wish I could say the same for alot of people. I am not saying everyone does but there are a fair amount of people that do. Let's stop playing high school games and keep it real and HONEST. My 2cents for all its worth. :D

I thought everyone knew that!
12-05-2005 15:29

it's the same as real life, and second life. It's all about who you are, who you know...blah blah blah. I dont rate period! What for? What's the reason for the rating in the first place? If you like something you go and buy it, if you dont you save money. Why do people have to know how its rated, when the bottom line is "how you feel" about the item being presented.

BUMP?...well that is just so its active in the forums, i believe. Big deal, all I do is scan the forums for whats new...I mean how many new items come out daily that it would fill the whole front page?

So all you new designers who actually do have quality work, dont sweat the rating system. I'm a person who rarely writes in forums but I look at this section daily and I spend my money on things I like. I NEVER RATE...dont see the reason for it. And i've seen some known designers make not so great items and still get alot of comments and such....Just be like me and laugh.

Make things to express yourself, to make yourself happy and to make some spending money. Everything in life and as in Second life requires balance. A little bit of too much causes unhappiness...believe me :D

So screw ratings, and remember, all that matters is what you feel. You like it, great, you dont, move on.

Got to agree with Sensual
12-05-2005 16:35
i have to agree with some of the comments here about ratings. i think we could probably do without them. i've personally felt discouraged in the past about apparent lack of interest in items i've posted to the forum. Please try to be honest in how you rate an item because it can be so discouraging for someone new and they might give up. i actually enjoy making things so i continue, even when i do feel discouraged. i think if the comments are gone from here the ratings should go also. This isn't a popularity contest it's a place to show what's new and catch a glimpse of others designs.

Why dont we take away the poster's name too! I mean come on guys, what if someone buys something because of a name advantage? How fair is that? DOWN WITH NAMES!

Have fun with the New Product forums. These are obviously meant for mutual masturbation and not for posting new products.

I'm done.

Enjoy all

Booo On Ratings, Period .
12-05-2005 17:33
As a new poster to the forums for a split second I was discouraged at like having 2 or 3 stars. No one wants to see something they worked hard on getting like peed on or whatever but I guess the main point of the classifieds is to have your products be seen so whether or not they are being rated highly at least there being seen. I would hope that most ppl are going to go and buy the things they like regaurdless of how the item is rated. Especially since people can rate an item whether or not they have bought it, the stars hold no real value other than making perties on the outside of the post :P

Another opinion about the issues in this forum
12-05-2005 18:37
Well my two cents worth:

The ratings do not make much of a differnce to me. I look at every single new product advertised in the forums and if I like it I buy it. My designs have gotten mixed ratings, and I feel a bit discouraged, but my customers do look in these forums and my sales do much better when I post here. And I get things by new designers that there is no way I would ever see if not for seeing it here.

I think that "ratings" are so subjective to the people that are giving the ratings as to be pretty arbitrary anyways. The products speak for themselves!

If you are a new designer, please post your stuff! I make a shopping list while I am a work based on what I see in the forums. I know many other people do too.

I would love a way to advertise better in world. But the classifieds suck. If anyone would like to meet sometime and discuss a good way to advertise new designers and new products in world, I would love to talk to you. I would be willing to even dedicate an area on my island to promote New designers/New Products exclusively. Something like a place you can display your new items for a two week period free of charge.

Lets not bicker at each other. Lets band together and help everyone advertise their stuff!

Anyone interested in brainstorming or who has a good idea along these lines, please im me in world.

No Comments = No Forums!

Purpose
The purpose of the Second Life Forums is to promote discussion and education about Second Life. We believe in an honest and open free exchange of ideas, and in always maintaining a respect for the opinions and positions of other people.

They believe in honest exchange of ideas? Well how can we express our opinions about items we create if we cannot comment on them.

Did they respect our opinions and positions about taking it out? No they just wanted to make their employee job a lil easier.. PFFT!

Opinions are like arse holes....

Dear Linden Lab.....

Let me sum up what people are saying in this section...give us our comments back...I don't know why you people always worry about the things that people are happy with! Your game has issues, the forums are fine the way they were. Focus less on the forums, and more on the game...afterall what do u need a forum for if you don't have a game?

unbelievable....
12-05-2005 19:30
good god! certainly you guys HAVE to be adult enough to take your CONSTRUCTIVE criticism to other areas instead of this one?? you seem to forget, whereas i dont agree with the rating system either...this WHOLE CLASSIFIED SECTION was once slated to be taken away ENTIRELY! So keep on whining and abusing what we currently DO have...and you'll soon see it swept away as well. technically, this isn't supposed to BE a popularity contest, but simply a means to show people what new designs you have available.

as i said once before, your SALES should tell the tale. The people who never post (or reply when it was permitted), rate or do anything other than check out what's new and move on are the ones who buy your designs. Get a grip and a steady handle on your egos, my friends.......post and leave until there's a better way. that way you dont have to see the idiotic meaningless rating system and put such unworthy value on it.

i'm with jonquille......this forum has become a joke. however, i will continue to post my new items for those who care about seeing what i have new. view it or not...rate it or not...the choice is yours, but i assure you i won't return to check on it. i have too many important ways to spend my time....

One star or five... Does it really matter?
12-05-2005 20:22
I visit the New Products section daily - I honestly do not pay attention to the comments nor the star ratings. If I like the product then I'm off to get it in-world. It's all what the individual customer likes isn't that how it is in the real world?

We all have our preference...a lot like the old adage. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What I may find to be lovely another may find that product to be a one star rating. So what - I said it before - Can't please everyone but harping on the the minor things certainly doesn't help either.

Designers keep up the good work and keep the new products coming - I'm a happy camper as long as I can shop. :) So more power to y'all.

more comments from the peanut gallery..
12-05-2005 21:00
As a new designer, I think its rather silly this forum has been changed like it has.. like another person posted, the purpose OF a forum is for discussion, and it's been totally destroyed. I rather like seeing replies to things that Ive made, good or bad. Its how one learns.
As for the stars, they dont bother me, it's funny to see stars on my products, since I feel so novice yet, lol. I agree with others, I'll keep posting my goods, at least it gets OUT there, proof is in the ch-ching ;-)

Independent Forums?
12-06-2005 00:25
i think that comment is much healthier than a rating system and we should either have it, or have nothing. Anyone interested in setting up an independent free expression designers forum? Perhaps that is the way to go as this feeling very undemocratic and obviously people aren't happy for a variety of reasons.

Threads from New Products forum which were independantly mis-posted have been merged together and moved to Off-Topic for further discussion.
