According to an interview with Microsoft Evangelist Robert Scoble, Ray Ozzie -CTO of Microsoft- is an investor in SL.

Robert Scoble: "Would Microsoft ever buy Second Life? God knows, you know. Although, Ray Ozzie is one of the investors in Second Life, right. And he's our CTO. So... Obviously we have some smart people who are executives at Microsoft, who have some money, who see something interesting going on in Second Life."

Some of you may remember Ray Ozzie from his previous company, Groove Networks. Groove Networks was acquired by Microsoft in 2005. Today, Office Groove 2007 Beta is available.

Mitch Kapor, another SL investor, said this about the acquisition of Groove by Microsoft:

"Microsoft acquired Groove Networks yesterday and Ray Ozzie was named CTO (of Microsoft). The press is focusing on this as about Ray joining Microsoft, which underplays the potential importance of Groove's technology. Microsoft has been a substantial investor in Groove for years and Bill Gates' huge respect for Ray is well known in the industry. The companies have been working closely together."

Well, interestingly enough, it could be a factor which keeps Microsoft from purchasing SL because of the various conflicts of interest.

I had Groove for a while. I posted about it here; was hoping to get someone to get it too, so we could try it out. No takers.

Does Microsoft buy companies that are losing money?

Heh, all the Microsoft haters, just think what the forums would be like, if we still had forums where you could bitch and moan about the company. Which we probably wouldn't.
