I don't know how many people read this in the news. Basically a guy went into a gay bar and attacked a guy with a hatchet, then shot another person and fled.

Later he shot a police officer during a traffic stop and was eventually wounded and died in a police shootout.

I was just reading his MySpace web page and that of his friends.

http://www.myspace.com/jakejekyll

It is a little disturbing on the surface. A couple of questions though.

Is anyone familiar with the song "Bring the Axe" or the group G.B.H.? It seems to be a popular theme on his pages and the pages of his friends.

What kind of place is New Bedford, Mass?

This kid clearly crossed the line between reality and fantasy. Is the world really that hard for kids in NB, Mass?

There is definitely a "hatchet" theme going on with the Insane Clown Posse. Although I don't think the theme is "go into a gay bar and use your hatchet to hack people up". But you do buy their merchandise from hatchetgear.com

I really must be missing something with the whole teen angst thing. Admittedly I am 34 and it was some time since I was a teenager but has that much changed?

I grew up really poor so maybe I didn't have time for teen angst. I spent most of my time working and figuring out how not to be poor. :)

I have to say though, if I was painting my face, acting like a Nazi and being generally unpleasant, no one would have to worry about me pulling this crap. My mother would have put a hatchet in my head long before I became a threat to society.

I've been there a couple of times and it seemed like a nice place, lots of parks, beaches nearby, etc. Seems like almost everybody I've met from New Bedford came from hard working families of either portuguese or french descent and catholic.

I never understood the teen angst either, I was too busy working and trying to stay in school... my mother sure would've taken care of any *angst* with a boot up my rear :p

Its been all over the news here in MA since it happened. http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2006/02/06/teen_gunmans_tie_to_woman_probed/

and yes, it was in Mass, not NH

Edit: grrr, boston globe blocks access...

here is a blub from wbur: http://www.wbur.org/news/2006/55591_20060203.asp

hmm, only says "a local bar" but New Bedford is in southern MA. It could be NH, but that isn't all that local to New Bedford.

well my point is bad things happen everywhere! why say what kind of place in new bedford, ma? what kind of place is columbine? or ANYWHERE? its the people, not the places! its the lack of parental intervention in a childs life that lets them choose bad people to hang out with, not the music, not the locality...and blaming a PLACE is just choosing something to pin it on which really makes no sense.

I made this little poem after the Columbine shootings when people were blaming it all on music and clothes etc. I for one get tired of hearing, oh it's the music they listen to and the clothes they wear.

Scapegoat

It's not the clothes
It's not the TV
It's not the music
When will they see

The terror within
Is hard to find
It's hidden inside
That tortured mind

Well, I normally abhor any kind of prison abuse (guard or inmate-inflicted), but I kind of had hopes he would be caught alive and introduced to a big burly non-white inmate for his prison stay. It would still be wrong, but I'd let karma slide if it went a little overzealous in this case. Instead the kid got off easy, suicide by cop.

I think you misunderstand my post. I asked about the hatchet imagery because it is a recurring theme with the musical group and with this guy.

I stated in my post that he crossed the line between reality and fantasy. I play World of Warcraft, but i don't go around burining people to death with my "magic wand". :)

It was more curiosity around this group and this admitted subculture surrounding the band.

As for my question about NB, Mass. I think geography does play some part. I didn't know if it was a poor town or a wealthy town. Sometimes, growing up in a place where industry has moved away can be extremely depressing. Again, it was just a curiosity about where he came from.

A number of things made this kid do what he did. I was just trying to understand a little more about what was going through his mind.

So kneejerk back at ya. :)

Working at a restaurant with teenagers, I got to hear ICP. Aaaaand lemme tell ya- I dont think they like anyone much! From the sounds of it I'd say they weren't too fond of women & minorities. Their songs all sound the same after about 2 songs. It must take them HOURS to find ways to put F Words into songs & rhyme with "dick".

I asked the kid why he liked them. His answer wasn't a surprise really: "They swear a lot!". Yeeeeaaaa, I think my future children will be going to a private school.;)

New Bedford is a historic but mostly impoverished seaport city between Cape Cod and Rhode Island. As a major whaling and fishing port, it bacame the home to a huge number of Portuguese immigrants. Later on, as the local economy was taken over by fabric mills, another wave of immigrants, this time French Canadians arrived. The mills and fishing collapsed and New Bedford got to be really run down and just horrible. You'd pray that the car wouldn't break down while you were passing through. It's a city of decaying brown tenements and either a bar or a Catholic church on just about every corner. The people who live there are best described as a bunch of ignorant peasants. They stay in their own neighborhoods and never bother to learn any English.
The insane property values in Massachusetts have really gentrified cities like Lowell and Watertown, but since New Bedford is basically just one giant slum full of white trash, it apparently is taking a little longer to clean it out. I really can't believe that there is a gay bar there, but then I never got over the gay bar in Fayetteville, NC, either.

Since you asked--

ICP is not a serious group. At all. AT ALL. I don't think I can stress that enough. They paint themselves like clowns and do amateur wrestling (I'm not joking). Their first really big hit album was The Great Malenko, a reference to a famous wrestler. Their songs are about drinking Faygo soda, and ridiculous scenarios like screwing fat girls or being a serial killer in a (juvenile) comical way. There is really almost no way to take them seriously.

A few years back, there was an interview with ICP where Violent J had his entire forearm covered in a ridiculous amount of duct tape, such that he couldn't even open his hand. The reporter, attempting the tried and true American journalistic tactic of trying to play up panic over a lot of nothing in order to boost ratings, asked Violent and Shaggy if their music was corrupting our youth (or some similar crock of shit). Violent responded something to the effect of, "I'm sitting here, face painted like a clown, with a fist covered in duct tape and you're going to ask me a question like that?"

Incidentally, in case you wondered, they are terrible wrestlers.

^ Perhaps the most fascinating twist of their career so far has been the twist involving the sixth joker's card. (Scroll down on that page.)

it is actually pro wrestling

they were treated as jobbers in the big promotions (WCW, WWE, ECW)

jobbers = enhancement talent

enhancement talent = guys who get pinned by the "real" stars

Since they love rasslin, and the big guys don't treat them as a "serious pro wrestler team", they astarted their own federation

if I am not mistaken, it is called "Juggalo Championshit Wrestling

so, in essence, i agree

their whole act is a joke and farce

and only the truly foolish could take them seriously

and only a real defective human can attack others based on any music

ps they also appeared in a porno (non sex) but I never hear them called porn stars or contributing to sex crimes

and for the record, I prefer Eminem. I think ICP sucks ass

Wow, just Wow

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

They were the last people I thought who would proclaim their faith

Try playing the end of Prince's "Darling Nikki" backwards for another clear example

people called Black Sabbath Satanic, but they seemed to miss the lyrics of "After Forever

ICP isn't the 1st, but I do appreciate the irony of them putting religious messages into something that was aimed at angry teens
