Ya rite. Like I'm gonna feel concerned enough by a stupid piece of legislature passed by some far away country to hand over my real name and address

moot point
03-07-2006 02:03
well, for us anyway..
each one of us have provided a legal name and address information to LL in order to gain access to SL and to these forums. enforcement of policy is reasonably pursued by LL. not to mention, it's for New Jersey and since LL is based in California, it should mainly apply to "Information content provider so, if you live in New Jersey.. be nice. ![]() _____________________

When I think of New Jersey, I think of Kevin Smith movies!
Is this one of those laws that sounds all-reaching but is actually much harder to enforce? _____________________

When, oh when, are they going to stop trying to legislate the internet? Talk about banging your head against the wall....

I'll worry if this is a US law.
But on top of Cybin's comments, it states public forum. SL's is 'private' I would suspect. I am saddened though to see this introduced by reps from my childhood district. Gah. _____________________

This is unenforceable, but the wording also leaves some ludicrous holes for a legal document. Such as the point it states that you must 'be identified by legal name and address or to register a legal name and address with the operator'... that's 'register a legal name and address' - not 'register your own legal name and address'.

When I think of New Jersey, I think of Mega XLR.
*rocks out* We... dig... GIANT ROBOTS! You... dig... GIANT ROBOTS! Chicks... dig... GIANT ROBOTS! Seriously. There's not possible way to enforce something as rediculous as this. It makes me want to bitchslap the people proposing it. I want to go back and smack the idiots who managed to pass the anti-anon-annoy law by cramming into the Battered Womens legislation. I makes me want to march on Washingtom with a... a GIANT ROBOT, and of course a few million geeks, nerds, tards, and armchair politicians. |

Being a New Jerseyan and this issue being so important to my job and livilihood, I just wrote the assemblyman sponsoring this bill, and he was replied very promptly. (Could have been an assistant sending off a pre-written letter, but it was very well written.)
He expressed that he's received a lot of feedback on this bill. The bill was written to address apparently a bunch of crap on the nj.com forums. (Unaffiliated with NJ's gov't.) He said he was understanding that the bill is likely too broad in scope, and is doing research to better understand the technology. I thanked him and wished him luck on dealing with the issue. Just goes to show that writing your local representative actually works to educate the people writing laws on technology you use. Also - for all of your knowledge, here's a link describing the Federal bill protecting ISPs from legal tort for stuff that people post using their software / site / etc. http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode47/usc_sec_47_00000230----000-. html _____________________
