I saw a bit of this odd little film late the other night.

It was called "Crash." Not the 2004 film that just won the Oscar for Best Picture -- this is another film with the same title. Directed by David Cronenberg (that should tip you off right there to its oddness), this 1996 film is one of his typical mumble-fests.

There were a couple of things that struck me as odd, though.

First of all, the plot involves -- well, it's just too strange. Let me quote from imdb.com:
From: imdb.com
Since a road accident left him with serious facial and bodily scarring, a former 'TV scientist' has become obsessed by the marriage of motor car technology with what he sees as the `raw sexuality' of car-crash victims. The scientist, along with a crash victim he has recently befriended, sets about performing a series of sexual acts in a variety of motor vehicles, either with other crash victims or with prostitutes who they contort into the shape of trapped-corpses. Ultimately, the scientist craves a suicidal union of blood, semen and engine coolant, a union with which he becomes dangerously obsessed.

Cue the theme music: "I'm In Love With My Car" - Queen :p

Anyway, there were a couple of things that struck me as I watched this twisted little movie. One of the aforementioned crash victims is played by Holly Hunter, and during one scene where she was, to put it delicately, engaged in an intimate act with one of the other characters, I was listening to her talking to him in an extremely erotic fashion, when it suddenly hit me -- "OMG! That's Elastigirl! Does Mr. Incredible know what she's doing????" :D

The other oddity was the main character, James Ballard, who was played by James Spader. If they ever make a film about the history of Second Life, I nominate this guy to play Philip. Take a look.

Here is our illustrious leader on the left, and James Spader as he appears in Crash on the right.

Sure... here are some:

The movie is based on a novel of the same name by J.(ames) G. Ballard. He's the author of the autobiographical Empire of the Sun, which was made into a movie by Steven Speilberg fifteen years or so ago. That movie was Christian Bale's first film.

Before Ballard got into writing autobiographical novels like Crash, Empire of the Sun, and The Kindness of Women, he wrote science fiction - the most famous of which was the novel The Drowned World, and the short story collection Vermillion Sands.

In another short story collection from 1967, The Overloaded Man, Ballard writes about a business entrepreneur who markets an immersive game that can be commonly and interactively played over television sets by millions - an alternative life in a video world for people who have not been very successful in real life.... The entrepreneur, up until then a failure, is slowly driven insane by his success - both in real life and in the video world he's created....

I think you all missed the point here, so I will address it and try to bring a little (very) intelligence to this thread. IMHO James Spader is the wrong choice for this role, I'm not saying I know of someone better, but look at his head for God's sake! It is obviously tilted the wrong direction! People are sure to notice this sort of thing! I mean, I understand about suspending ones disbelief and all, but I really don't think people will go for this! Perhaps if the good Mr. Spader was willing to undergo some sort of surgery, this idea might fly. No offense to James Spader, but even the best of actors could hardly be expected to pull off a performance of this magnitude, imagine trying to hold your own head at a slant that is totally alien to it! For close to two hours, no less! I just can't see it happening.

Perfect PP!

I think I saw a part of that movie once - sitting alone in a hotel room waiting for time to become dinnertime.. I later bought the book.. In fact I liked it. It was different..

I like the actor to.. But as I have so hard to be serious to 100 in any case.. who will play you PP or worse who will play ME? Any suggestion? (serious)

/Tina - Now need a steady breakfast then a hard sweaty work in SL waiting..

I wonder who Philip thinks should play himself.

The argument on paedophilia is in another thread. They could use your kind of intelligence there. ;)

Heheheh. Hmm.

Good idea. Let's list our dream casts for SECOND LIFE: THE MOTION PICTURE. But that's another thread.

To answer your question, Tina... hmm... for me, perhaps Johnny Depp...? or that kid that was in Napoleon Dynamite? LOL!

For you? (Staring at your hot forum avatar) Angelina Jolie, of course. :D

The Only natural choice to play the dazzlingly handsome somewhat hispanic and yet arabic looking Boliver Oddfellow would of course have to be Antonio Bandaras. Yes thats it! I will settle for none less
