Check out the wicked lil robo tank:

http://www.technovelgy.com/ct/Science-Fiction-News.asp?NewsNum=320

although *this*

http://www.bostondynamics.com/dist/BigDog_Feb-26-2006.wmv

is way creepier. The video sends chills up my spine. That thing is trotting down the absolute middle of the "uncanny valley" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_Valley ).

The sound emitted from that thing is maddening and max creepy. The scenes of it wandering alone through mud and rubble, still buzzing like a mad wasp after all humanity is exterminated, haunt my dreams.

I believe we would be better liked as a Nation if we reduced our Army to 50,000 troops and stopped invading other nations

OMG! I'm gonna have nightmares from that video for the rest of my life. That thing is really scary. We're so programmed to recognize biologic locomotion, I seriously had to stare at that thing for a good 30 seconds before I was able to convince myself it wasn't 2 guys with their upper bodies hidden inside an air conditioner. Very impressive (and frigtening).

Now here's what I want to know. If the government replaces human soldiers with robots, can they still get away with making illegal and immoral war by crying "support the troops"? Am I unpartriotic if I don't support the droids?

Best movie robot EVAH. The toolbox with the plunger grappling-hook in 2 was kinda lame, though.

If it involves agreeing with 80's pop culture, you've got me over a barrel.

Shiney.. shiney... shiney!!! oooooo shiney..

And yes, I agree with the witness the dawning of the RL Matrix. Having robots doing the war battles, has a serious moral issue in my mind.

It's the perfect military weapon though. What's the point in destroying it, when we can just make another? I would think using our 'human troops' would be a deterrant to not wage war. But alas, its come of age where we can fight 'because we can, and don't have to worry about casualties'.

That thought is just incredibly scarey to me.

You think that's scary? Check out >Tetra Vaal - the future of law enforcement<

This is just a promo using a prototype - but expect this to be in use in major warzones soon...

That's just CGI, right? Oh, please God, tell me they haven't built that. :(

EDIT: Apparently, the TetraVaal film was made by Neill Blomkamp for SPYFILMS:

Amazing, creepy stuff.

Yes, sorry - couldn't resist! :D

I thought I'd allow everyone the little frisson of excitement you get from thinking it's real, then heaving a huge sigh of relief when you realise it is just CGI. ;)

However, watch this space - I'm sure it's just a matter of time! O.o

There are currently patents for automated aquisition and firing solutions. Essentially you can currently mount a completely automated turret on a humvee. They're still working on the autonomous vehicle portion (there are yearly contests). The best ones so far have been able to navigate miles of desert, but they have yet to make the leap of being able to handle traffic.
