I wonder if anyone on the SL forums can assist me. I have to fill in a form W8-BEN in relation to some earnings on the web. This form allows you to opt out of tax withholding, so that your employer in the US can pay you everything that you are earning, on the basis that you will pay tax in your own country and that there is a tax treaty between the US and your country of residence.

It seems to me having read the instructions for the form that I will need to apply for an individual tax identification number, even though I already have a national insurance identity number in the UK, and the point of the form is not to pay tax in the US. Is this right?

If anyone in the same position can inform me that would be very helpful lol. I am cross eyed from zapping between W8-BEN and the instructions for W8-BEN. Thanks!
