It can be done, but it's extremely inadvisable. About the only thing that will work reliably is IM. You'll see regular chat out of order. Attempting to make changes to your avatar can be damaging. Building works, mostly, but you can end up with objects appearing to be in places other than where they actually are. Textures can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours to load. Teleporting via the map will fail, but teleporting by accepting a TP from another av will work. Walking is very difficult.

I've done it. Its no picnic.
You're almost better off going cold turkey without SL while your connection is down. Playing SL over dialup is like touring a chocolate factory while your jaw is wired shut. _____________________

It was next to impossible in beta. With 1.7 and its (apparently) higher minimum system requirements, it should be practically impossible.
