This is month-old news so it may be passe to some, but it I didn't realize it had gone through until today. Autodesk now owns Alias, meaning long time competing products Maya & 3DS Max are now made by the same company. Click here for details. 3D people, what do you think? Good news, bad news? Predictions for the future? By the way, I realize this discussion might be better suited to forums on sites like highend3d, but since I know way more people here, I figured this would be a more interesting place to discuss it. I have mixed feelings about the merger myself. I'm reserving judgment for the moment though. Just curious what other people might have to say on the subject.

3DS Maya? I don't really have an overview of the 3D market, but having less products competing is probably bad news. I still have to see what comes out of the Macromedia/Adobe buyout as well.

Autodesk very likely has more interest in the technology within StudioTools than Maya itself. It'll complete the gap in their CAD/CAM portfolio, especially the automotive design industry, which may prove to be very lucrative for them. It also helps them go up against the likes of Think3 or Pro Engineer.
For the fate of Maya, it'll probably go the direction similar to what happened to Revit. Revit seems to be happily running alongside ADT, and so far has not faced anything detrimental to its development. Revit's popularity however, is limited by the current speed of todays desktop computers, and is slowly picking fans in the US in the architectural sector.
Quite likely, the cool stuff and features from both 3ds and Maya might merge or benefit from each other, leaving only the interface different and unique to both.

My thoughts- The programs will stay as they are, but maybe a few years down the road they'll merge into one product.
Hmmm, the use of Character Studio within Maya would be an interesting idea. Maya's rendering capabilities, NURBS (Max's nurbs suck), in Max.
