If these links still work that is. I had to dig 'em up from some old posts from another site:

Yes, and for those of us who AREN'T rich, what's this going to cost us? ![]() An upgrade to Windows Vista. And for full DX10 benefits, all new video cards. So yea, it's gonna hurt. But wouldnt it be nice to see SL look like that video?? _____________________

I'm no computer scientist, but the full benefits of DX10 require a DX10 capable video card. At this point, I am unaware of such a card in retail channels yet. Maybe we should be drooling and/or green with envy in about 6 months.

Tis the video card (and the acompanying motherboard replacement, because my motherboard doesnt support PCIExpress) that troubles me. _____________________

So I bet I can predict exactly what it will look like: the same it does now. In Windows Vista it will probably look worse and have half the framerate because vista layers opengl on top of direct x so its really directx acting like opengl. sounds like an emulator to me. every emulator i have ever used has been crap. _____________________

I'll hold out on getting Vista as long as possible. Give it a year or two & see what happens. If all else fails, I'll go back to Linux. _____________________

More then likely theyre just wrapping DirectX in an OpenGL interface, which shouldn't (in theory) produce a significant decline in performance. Windows->Mac emulation (on the other hand) is a nightmare, because each processor instruction has to be reordered, resulting in MASSIVE slowdowns, so I understand where you're coming from. Its Microsoft though, so its good to distrust what they do with this by default. ==Chris _____________________

Yep! Even more detailed DirectX 10 stuff. FINALLY! They're trying to get rid of the GPU/CPU bottleneck!! Course ya know this'll mean new video cards all around? But from the sounds of it we'll need it.
Details On DirectX 10 And yea, SL uses OpenGL. _____________________
