I bet the real reason for these regular Wednesday morning hiatuses (hiatii?) is to give the Lindens a chance to gather round and have a good ol' snortle at their collected clips of our in-world antics in the past week.

Installing the upgrade: 30 minutes
Cackling over clips of misaligned pixel-slapping, ill-advised fashion choices, physically improbable builds, and creative griefing episodes: 4 hours
Cleaning up the chocolate-milk-through-nose pools: 30 minutes

Those 'box-on-head' moments just never grow stale.

I'm extremely new here...

I signed up after seeing an episode of an often very boring TV show about "cool stuff" called Beyond Tomorrow, here in Australia.

Could anyone fill me in on where to find an ETR (expected time of resolution) to these outages?

Thanks ;)

Sure thing, sorry I couldnt help you more. I'm quite new around here as well.

I have found that they update the message you get when trying to log in quite often. Not always 100 percent accurate, but they do *try*, which is all you can really ask for. Server spool up / load / online times aren't always the easiest thing to judge, especially when affecting changes.

Good luck :)

Usually about 11 sl time. If you are lucky maybe 10.
I love imagining the lindens sitting around laughing at the crazy stuff that happens in world.

Information about planned manitenance/upgrades is posted in the ANNOUNCEMENTS & NEWS forum at least a couple of days prior to the event.

For example, information on the currernt downtime was posted 5 days ago. the thread HERE clearly states the expectations for downtime.

They usually post an idea of when they'll be finished in update threads:

What's happening now isn't exactly maintenance. It's an update.

The status page never shows projected uptimes but it does give you the correct status of the system.

View this page to find out when the new client is available, we are currently on 1.10.6. When that number changes, you can download.

http://secondlife.com/community/downloads.php

After they put in the updates they need a few hours to test the system internally before opening the servers to residents. This is very much standard like when MMOGs update with a new patch.

its asks for you to download the new client. then doesnt let you and asks to goto downloads page were its the same client anyhow.
so i think that the usual down message would suffice not a misleading download is needed message

Sounds pretty spammy to me, DJScribbles ;) ...

I find it odd that someone with 3 posts is cautioning others on... well... pretty much anything.

Thanks for your post Aodhan, I've no real experience with MMOs in general, apart from hearing about them from others.

I'd logged on after this TV show, and spent ages messing with my character's features only to find I couldnt move once I'd finished, LOL ;)

thanks for another link to bookmark!

Uh, have you read the charter for this forum?

"The Sandbox - Just like inworld, a place to play--where wild and crazy threads go! Also, discuss your ideas and observations about non-SL topics."

Sounds like they're pretty on topic to me.

Glad to be of help. I'm broadcasting that link because a whole lot of people don't realize that the client learns that there's an update BEFORE the update gets put up for download (thus causing the effect you see). They update the servers first then after they finish testing, they put the new client up.

I've monitored the numbers once before and they actually make last minute changes to the client during the update period.

Feh.

Never. Posting. Evah. Agen.

Not even the off-topicness is sufficiently off-topic to be diverting. And the only on-topic type text is typically turgid.
