Why because we are gluttonous lazy bastards who say it won't happen to me so who cares. --Ishtar Pasteur |

anyone else hoping for a snow day tomorrow? i'm keeping my fingers crossed! They're saying 3-6 inches of snow and sleet by tomorrow morning in the DC area. It only takes a milimeter, or even just the mere mention that it might snow, to close half the schools in the area. It takes about half an inch to close the federal government. I haven't been to the store today but I'm sure it's loaded with people buying 18 gallons of milk, 40 rolls of toilet paper, and enough canned goods to survive a nuclear winter. Tomorrow will be a good day to do Christmas shopping since everyone else will be at home cowering. _____________________

chip, i forgot that we live in the same area. /smacks forehead
and yes, people in DC absolutely freak about snow. it usually snows a fairly significant amount a few times a year, so you'd think they'd get used to it. i always imagine people from north dakota laughing at us when it snows a pitiful 4 inches. ![]() normally i would want all snow. but this time, i'm holding out for the wintry mix. that's going to make one icy mess in the morning. easy for me to say that since i don't drive. ![]() SNOW DAYS FOR EVERYONE! so we can sit at home and play SL or WoW. ![]() _____________________

Try living in Buffalo. We don't get "snow days". If we did, we'd have to close the whole region from November through March. It snows almost every day here, and nothing ever closes due to snow unless it's a real act of God, like the 7-footer we got a few years back, and then it's no cause for celebration. 2-3 feet is pretty much an every day occurance. Getting up an extra hour early to dig your car out is just a fact of life here.
This year hasn't been too bad so far, just a few snowy days, but that has me worried. Every year the snow has come late, it's come exceptionally hard. Anyway, this thread reminds me of when I first moved to NYC, where I lived for a couple years before returning here. It was January, and when we climbed into the Uhaul to head out of Buffalo, there was about 3 feet of snow on the ground and it was coming down hard. In other words, it was just like any other January day around here. The thruway was flowing smoothly at 65 MPH, just like it always does. But when we got to about Westchester or so, all that suddenly changed. There was maybe a quarter inch of dusting on the ground and everyone was freaking out. They were huddled over their steering wheels, gripping them as hard as they could, and no one was willing to go any faster than about 6 MPH. Several people had even pulled over to the shoulder and parked, evidently terrified of this mysterious white substance underneath their cars. We were really amazed. We even passed by a few fender benders, apparantly caused by people who were too panicked to just drive. I'm sure these people probably thought they had lost control in the big bad snow, never realizing that it was their own fear that had caused the problem, not the snow itself. It remained like that all the way into the city. The final 100 miles of the trip took longer than the first 300 because no one was willing to move. It was nuts. Anyway, if that's the trade-off, you snow fearing people can keep your weather-induced free holidays. I'm happy to stay where people don't crash and where the wings taste good. So we've got the highest incidence of colon cancer in the world, and we can lose Super Bowls like there's no tomorrow, at least we can drive in all weather. ![]() _____________________

Snow (well, ice really) day was today. I worked last night and drove home *sideways*. No such thing as a snow plow 'round these here parts.

It's starting already. Anybody for a 2.5 hour drive to get the 10 miles home?

Ha back when i was a youngster we had 3 feet of snow in Chicago and they even made us come in to school, on a saturday! Not to mention that Daley's incessant midnight snowplowing makes it really hard to get any sleep. And don't get me started on the salt. How can I wear the same suit every day if the cuffs are all crusty with salt? It's almost like the City Gov't doesn't want to give us a snow day. At least it gives me a reason to ask people at work if they "wore rubbers this morning" with a straight face. Unless, of course, you're stuck at O'Hare, then it's definitely a snow day. In that case, send me a PM and I'll bring you a nice cot and hot water bottle....cheapest in town! _____________________
