As a bumper sticker it's humorous. I think I find it humorous for reasons different from yours, but it's a GOOD bumper sticker.

One could hope, with any luck, he'll put that ring on one day and never return...

Oh, crap, was daydreaming there for a sec. What were we talking about? :D

Is this the best the right can do? LOL

The grammar sucks, "A person" followed by "their"? And the idea that your mind and your head are the same thing is kind of a stretch. But with the right wing going down in flames, I guess there's not a lot of time for coming up with bumper stickers. Unless, of course, you count their whole political agenda.

I'm with you on the grammar issue. To say, "a person so open minded that his brain fell out" is not only better grammar, it hits harder. It's more intimate. The author of the joke seems to be focusing so hard on smearing Liberals as a group that he diluted the effect of the joke.

On the issue of "mind" and "brain," I disagree. This intentional conflation of concepts is at the heart of the joke. To miss this is to miss the joke. Think about it. Why is the joke funny? Because it sets us up. It has us thinking about the abstract concept of "open mindedness," then it intentionally surprises us and confounds our line of thought by throwing the abstract concept out the window and bringing us the image of a physical brain falling out.

This "surprise" after a "setup" is a classic comic technique. It's misdirection, as in a magic trick. The unexpected turn produces a laughter reaction.

The lack of setup and surprise is why neither of these is classically funny:

Sure, they appeal to our sense of irony. They also bring us a bit of mean spirited "revenge" that could be amusing. But, they miss the mark as "character" jokes because 1) they point out the obvious, 2) they don't reward us for "knowing our subject," 3) they don't give us "permission to laugh," but instead leave us feeling dirty and depressed.

A classic character joke tickles us by reminding us of a trait we had overlooked or may not find funny outside the context of the joke, exaggerating that trait and giving us "permission" to laugh at it. A character joke's humor is greatly increased if the audience is familiar with the subject being satirized. The audience feels that they're being rewarded for knowing the subject. The audience feels a release as the joke is granting them "permission" to laugh at the subject.

An example of this type of humor would be Bill Cosby. Cosby's humor is not mean spirited. We feel good when laughing at Bill's crazy characters.

You might point to Howard Stern as the exception to this formula. Howard seems to break all these rules and many people find him hilarious. Howard turns the formula inside out and it works for him. Go figure.

Usurpation of the plural for the singular in order to denote gender neutrality. It's becoming very common. It cetainly sounds better than: "A person so open minded that his/her brain fell out." Pesonally, I'm in favor of it.

funny

The use of "him" in the joke, instead of "their," makes the joke more intimate. An intimate joke is a funnier joke. The audience gets closer to the subject. The use of "him," instead of "their," aids visualization. The audience is encouraged to create a mental picture of a guy (or girl) with his brain falling out. This is funnier than the abstract concept posed by "their."

I'm just sayin.

Woots! You DID it! You followed the classic formula of "setup" and "surprise" to make a funny. And so neatly.

My earlier post (para):
The technique of "surprise" after a "setup" is a classic comic technique. It's misdirection, as in a magic trick. An unexpected twist produces a laughter reaction.

An intentional confusion of concepts or images is at the heart of the surprise. The "surprise" is funny because we've been set up. The joke has us thinking along a certain line. Then the joke hits us from "left field" with an absurd conflation of our original concept and a wildly different concept, the concepts being related only by the context of the joke. This "interruption" of our thinking strikes us as funny.

Gabe's joke intentionally confused the original, innocent, meaning of the word "intimate" with a sexual meaning.

Nice one. :)

It actually goes back to Middle English. Only grammar teachers (and their acolytes) have ever said it is not proper; but they had a tendency to extend Latin grammar rules to English.

Here's a "most Democrats won't think this is funny" joke:

When asked whether they would have sex with President Clinton, eight out of ten American women responded "not again". (And soon after I discovered that Elizabeth Gracen, a favorite of mine from the Highlander TV series, was apparently one of the eight).

Here's a "most Alaskans won't think this is funny" joke:

Staggaring up from his cabin soon after the Exxon Valdez ran aground, the captain chastized his helmsman: "No, no! I said _Tanquerey_ on the rocks!"

I think that our distinguished visitor from Mars will agree that these are adequately humorous.

And to end on a more didactic note:

This is the one thing that Peter Jackson got totally wrong. The reason that Gandalf won't touch the ring is not because it's magic (where's the applicability in that?); it's because the use of power to coerce is the first step on the path to corruption.

This is such an alien message these days that I want to say it again: the use of power to coerce is the first step on the path to corruption.

Galadriel says it almost out-and-out when Sam asks her to take the ring and put an end to evil in the world. She says: "That is how it would begin. But it would not stop with that, alas!"

Yet this same Gandalf (not Tolkien's Gandalf, that's for sure) knocks Denethor to the ground with his fist and has his horse kick him into a burning pyre. Sometimes it's necessary to use force against evil, Jackson would no doubt say. And President Bush would surely agree.

So it begins. But I cannot see it stopping with that, alas.
