Should we send him memos that say the opposite of what is going to happen?

First it was that the PDB saying "Bin Laden Determine to Attack in the US." That wasn't enough for him to think this attack would happen.

Now we learn that he was told the levees would break in LA.

From: someone
A Homeland Security Department report submitted to the White House at 1:47 a.m. on Aug. 29, hours before the storm hit, said, "Any storm rated Category 4 or greater will likely lead to severe flooding and/or levee breaching."

The internal department documents, which were forwarded to the White House, contradict statements by President Bush and the homeland security secretary, Michael Chertoff, that no one expected the storm protection system in New Orleans to be breached.

"I don't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees," Mr. Bush said in a television interview on Sept. 1. "Now we're having to deal with it, and will."

Whoever sends memos to the White House just needs to make them say the opposite of what they want the President to believe. That is the only solution I can think of.

Not that I'm defending the President, but what about the Governor of the state of Louisiana who was more concerned with what to wear and didn't want to look too wealthy for her tv appearances. I'm sure she new long before the president did. The mayor probably knew too but no, we must blame the President for everything. Ok, so he heard about it on the 29th of August like you say, was that enought time to fix the levees? I don't think so. It's not his fault the people weren't able to get out of harms way, I blame that on the mayor and state government. Just so you know, I don't believe that President Bush has handle everything in the best possible way, he's made mistakes, but so has everyone else. Look at Kennedy slamming Alito for belonging to a specific type of club, when he himself belonged to the same kind of club. Double standards are starting to get to me. I think everyone should step back and look in the mirror before casting stones. Stop placing blame and work on the solutions...Geez

I didn't blame the President for everything. Whether or not he had time to fix the levees is not the issue. The issue is that he is lying.

Why wouldn't he say, "Yes, we got word the day before this could be a terrible disaster but there was not time to fix the levees. Instead we began immediately preparing to mitigate the damage we knew was coming."

He didn't say that. Instead he lied. He denied that he was given information that he clearly had.

My question is why? Why put yourself in that position?

It's not really a double standard in this case. His administration merged FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and Homeland Security. He also personally put an unqualified idiot in charge of the whole thing (who was one of his buddies and he did later get rid of him). The idiot's replacement isn't that great either as he has to manage two organizations that are really for two different things. They do benefit from having access to each other's resources, but that really should have been achieved by other means.

It's on a scale of stupid like combining the Army and the Coast Guard. Oh wait...

the article states the message was sent to the White House, doesn't necessarily mean the President was told right away. But if he was and he did lie then that would be a different story. But like I said, I'm not defending the Pres, I don't know exactly when he was advised of this. And there would be no proof either way. I just saying I'm tired of the blame game that seems to be the growing trend in politics. When is someone going to step up and deal with things instead of pointing fingers.

I don't argue with you there. My point was that they have known about the levees being weak for many years but the local gov elected not to do anyhting about it, Now all of the sudden it's the federal gov's fault.

We've known about the levee issues since the 60's. Do some google searches for yourself.

Also, it's really not the president's fault or place to decide what happens in NO. The president can't control troops in the homeland, it was up to the govenor to direct them. It was the Mayor's responsibility to direct the people - Perhaps make use of all those school buses he left sitting around?

Just look up the very basis of your claim. FEMA is not a first responder. It's up to the city then the state to deal with the emergency situations. FEMA can't get setup in under a week to deal with emergencies.

This is typical "Bush sucks" garbage without any substance.

I respectfully disagree. This is typical "Bush is caught lying again" garbarge. The issue being presented, as I'm reading the OP, isn't if he was repsonsible for the levees, but rather if the President was informed of soemthing that he then claimed he didn't know about?

p.s. did you really say "homeland?"

Uhm --the levees were the job of the Army Corp of Engineers. That's FED.

The Governor DID request FEDERAL aid directly from Bush and FEMA on August 29th.

Sen. Kennedy severs ties to Harvard club

By ANDREW MIGA
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Edward Kennedy, who criticized Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito's past membership in a controversial Princeton University alumni club, severed his ties Tuesday with a former Harvard college social club that bans women members.

"He has decided to be taken off their rolls, believing that it is a mistake to continue to be affiliated," Kennedy spokeswoman Melissa Wagoner said in a statement.

The Massachusetts Democrat, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, grilled Alito during Senate confirmation hearing last week about Alito's ties to the Concerned Alumni of Princeton, an alumni group that opposed the admission of women and minorities at the Ivy League School.

A Washington Times story about Kennedy's Owl Club ties last week sparked criticism from Republicans who branded Kennedy a hypocrite.

Kennedy joined the Owl Club when he was a student at Harvard. Though not an active member since college, he donated about $100 to the club last October, his office said Tuesday.

Kennedy has sent a letter to the club asking for his name to be removed from all official documents.

"Senator Kennedy joined Harvard's Owl Club in 1954, a social organization similar to a fraternity, before women were admitted to the campus and long before they were integrated into campus life," Wagoner said.

Kennedy blasted Alito for belonging to a group that doesn't even exist any more, and disbanded, as I understand it, several decades ago. When caught as a CURRENT member of a similar group, Kennedy ONLY NOW leaves the group that STILL EXISTS TODAY.

So, does that just mean that Democrats are better at holding onto bigotry than Republicans, then?

Yah --uh huh - Kennedy to my knowledge didn't use his affiliation in his fraternity as a a badge on his resume. Alito actually used his affiliation with CAP as a bragging point to demonstrate his misogynist racist stripes on his job applications to the Reagan Junta as recently as 1985.

To equate membership in all-boys fraternity in 1954 and a radical band of racist, women-hating fag-bashers -such as Alito not only belonged to, but demostrated RECENT affinity with are world's apart.
