I have been having really #%$^@# up dreams of late.
I tell myself over and over again that if I ever get to ride on a train where the tracks go forward and backwards in time, that I would gather the numbers for the next lotto drawing. Instead what do I decide to do? "Hey lets go back to the days of Jim Crow and enlighten people." OMG, WTF is wrong with me!!
So my wife and I decide to go back in time on this mission to the past. Right before we depart is not the time to find out that we are not allowed to bring A-K 47 to the past with us!! OMG!!! The conductor informed us that we couldn't bring back anything that didn't exist durring that time. Great! Now we are so screwed, KKK here we come, un-armed! Just wonderfull.
So much #&^%#% up %&$# happened that I don't even want to go into it because it was just so horrible. I ended up having to flee. I was so enraged over the events that I fill up with hatred. But then I realised that it wasn't the guilty party I hated, but the events and acts which shouldn't have happened which enraged me. Luckily for me I had access to a time machine and could prevent the events from happening. I could go back again and again untill I figured out how to make things right, and undo the wrong. But this time I wasn't going to be gentle, I was pissed. These weren't just things I saw in a movie or read in a history book, they were personal and someone was going to pay.
At this point the dream fades, I don't really know what happens in the rest of the story, but what do you think could happen? How could a time traveler give him/herself an advantage in the world of the past when they are not able to carry weapons or technology back with them? I'm looking for ways besides cheating at horse races and the stock market. Are there any advantages to being ahead of your time? Are we any more evolved than the people of the 1930, 1800, 500B.C. ? Could we make a positive difference if we could go back, or would we just be locked up for having crazy theories of relativity and saying the earth revolves around the sun? How would you fare in a harsher world that fears your knowledge and culture?

How would you fare in a harsher world that fears your knowledge and culture? Knowing the earth revolves around the sun and that AK-47's will one day exist don't really help if you go back to the past where it is accepted that the sun revolves around the earth and the musket is the pinnacle of firearm innovation. Sure they're good to know, but you can't DO anything with them. Instead it's good to know good old fashioned historic facts. Like which battle takes place where, why and when; who wins what election/revelotion and how they did it; where large undiscovered cache's of resources are going to be discovered by who and when; etc, things like that. Now if you -really- wanted to change the world, you'd go back far enough in time to predate colonialism and start a unification movement among african tribes so that they form their own continent spanning empire that could pose more of a threat to the eurpoean invaders that will one day arrive to enslave them.

Do what I do in MY dreams when I time travel. I avoid the customs laws of what I can or can't take into the past, by skipping the train. I just teleport through time. And yes, my dreams ARE weirder then yours.

What if changing the evil you know will happen causes greater harm. What if by killing Hitler you allow one of his victims to survive, who later turns in to a much worse tyrant, killing and torturing many more, or even destroying the human race?

What if by killing Hitler you allow one of his victims to survive, who later turns in to a much worse tyrant, killing and torturing many more, or even destroying the human race? And then one of the survivors ends up becoming A NEW HOPE to SAVE US ALL! Thus bringing about the longterm survival of humanity (until the next calamity).
