What I was doing that morning...
01-28-2006 21:36
One morning back in 86, I was at work, dealing with the usual trivial stuff a dead-end job throws at me. That morning, the radio was off. Then, a guy who was usually the "class clown" at my job back then comes into the room, and announces that the Challenger blew up on takeoff. No one believed him. We thought he was joking. Then, he turned on the radio.

I was 5 and I still remember it, they brought in a TV at school to let us watch the shuttle launch. and then it blew up. It's on of those things in my childhood I'll never forget .

I was at work, talking to a customer on the phone about her bill, when she suddenly said, "Oh, my god," and proceeded to tell me what had happened. It was heartbreaking to me to think of those seven astronauts dying so unexpectedly that way. P2

I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was a Freshman in high school. Shuttle launches were still a pretty Big Deal at my school. My English class was "lucky" and got one of the TVs. So we watched..... and sat in stunned silence, waiting for some explanation. Our English teacher turned off the TV. Then our Principal announces over the intercom that the shuttle had exploded - and we were to observe a moment of silence. I remember watching the news when I got home, and thinking how horrible it was for the families to be sitting there watching their loved ones vanish in the blink of an eye. Then those horrid jokes started going around. I don't think I will ever understand how people seem to get such enjoyment out of any tragedy.

I was a sophmore in HS when it happened. I dont remember where I was tho- my mind blanked out most of my HS years As for the jokes that came after, they were funny. For a very very very short while. Then they got tiresome. Sure, jokes about that stuff may seem a bit harsh but comedy is one way people cope with tragedy. My fiance was 1 when it happened so she doesnt remember squat.

In my school, we would watch every shuttle launch. Each room had it's own T.V. - so we were all gathered around in our home room class. It was a very sad day and they brought in counselors to help the students understand and digest what they had seen. All of the astronauts that have made the ultimate sacrifice are hero's in my mind.

I cried - I was cheering for Christa McAuliffe when she found out she was going to to up. I was so happy to see that someone other than an astronaut was getting a chance go go into space. I'd applied also, quite seriously to go up with the challenger. (I'm used to be a little nuts, I've even jumped out of airplanes before). It was a very, very sad day for NASA and space exploration. If anyone had to find the problem with the shuttle though, I'm glad it was my other hero - Feynman, because I know he really found the problem and it won't happen again. .
