im actually less scared that a seperation of church and state is not enforced,

than i am the fact so few people feel it should be.

And Peppi did go uppeth Mt. Sinai and look upon the face of the Lord. And he did sayeth unto Him, "Oh Lord, we do hav'eth here one of the several drafts of your Commandments which our committee in Baton Rouge did'th see fit to send back for clarification". And verily the Lord did smote him for rank stupidity.

This was the best part.

Seriously though.... this bites. Though I can sense the anti-religious forum trollers coming in here to have their little chuckle and stir up hostility very soon (sigh) even not being an 'active' religious type at all, I just say... what's next? The bible being rewritten? :/

"Contacted after the meeting, Jewish Rabbi Stan Zamek of Beth Shalom Synagogue said choosing what version of the Ten Commandments to place in a government building points up the deficiency of the idea.

"I think there's a problem displaying any version in a government building. I think it's a dangerous intrusion of government into people's religious liberties in any case," Zamek said.

"You are inevitably choosing one religion over another," he said."

Bingo. This is why there should be 100% separation, because some group(s) will always get the short end of the stick.

My favorite bit from the article:

"There appears to be no truth to the rumor that Henry Hyde, Dan Burton, Bob Livingston, Newt Gingrich, Bill Clinton and Bob Barr lobbied to have the "thou shalt not commit adultery" commandment taken out."

:D

Well, not to nitpick, but, yes, the Hebrew word ratsach used in Exodus 20:13 is properly defined as "to break into pieces, that is, kill (a human being), especially to murder," and is certainly distinct from shachat, the word commonly used for the killing of an animal, even a sacrificial killing. So they're really not changing the meaning of that particular commandment.

The fussing over using the KJV is just stupid, though. There's no intrinsic difference in the meaning of the commandments from one version to another.

yeah, but remember, most zealots are literalists - they have no capacity for metaphorical thinking. and the zealots are their electoral base (or -so they think...-;)

that's why they gotta waste their time nitpicking over this - instead of actually carrying out important duties on the taxpayer's dime... :(

I'd rather they do something they're actually qualified for - like get out on the highway and pick up trash.

Well, y'know, some shit is just common sense. Kinda like how there is no commandment about "Thou shalt not run with scissors," or "Thou shalt not pet a rattlesnake."

and "thou shalt use Blaspemy to name thy Pro football team" :D

You mean "shalt NOT?" or are they seeking approval to do so?

I kinda think that they oughta change one of the other team's names (basketball or something) to the "New Orleans Sinners," just for equal time. :D

The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments in a courthouse........ You cannot post: "Thou Shalt Not Steal," "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery” and "Thou Shall Not Lie" in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians -- it creates a hostile work environment!

I dislike that it is a branch of the government doing this, but I do like the way they have chosen to reinterpret the bible. It just shows, once again how mutable the words of that work of fiction are.

By approaching it from a religious standpoint they are getting it all wrong. If they use the ten commandments as an example of an early form of law-fine. And all this arguing shows they aren't so worried about the religious side anyway. It's all nuts over there in LA LA land.
