http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-us&x=3&y=6&p1=6519With the Windows Updates coming to a close, if you're not upgraded to the next version, you're pretty much in severe risk of being compromised. http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1974813,00.aspThe sleeze strikes again. There are two sides of the coin in this one. One side of course, being on the users who can't afford to upgrade to the next OS, the other are the ones who are perfectly content at being where they are and want Windows to be updated. Are you ready?

Windows ME was such crap I don't know why anyone would want to still be using it.
Worst. OS. Ever.

Even extended support for almost 6 years after the release date is more than I would have expected. That said, if you're still plugging away with ME, you probably know more about keeping it running than any of MS's tech support team at this point.

The answer: Her "Boyfriend" told her how to do it & how cool it is. She can't be too smart either since she loves Windows ME. I still get people asking me to fix their computers running Windows 98. NOT the 2nd edition either!! I really hate trying to stiffle my laughter.

I went from 98 to ME and regretted it every single day. If you are still using ME, upgrade to XP. Trust me it's worth the money. XP isn't perfect, but at least it works!

How long should microsoft continue to support an out of date OS? How good is the support for, say, OS8 on a mac?

Back when I sold Computers for COMPUSA, I was asked "what happened to Windows ME? It looked nice and it only came out like a year or two ago?". I explained to my customer that Windows ME was the equivalent of an unwanted pregnancy, and that Microsoft was the listless teenager that used a coathanger to abort WinME and toss it into a back-alley dumpster.
Remarkably, they bought everything I put in front of them.

How good is the support for, say, OS8 on a mac? If you make and distribute an OS thats currently under your company's liability, then for sure, they need to patch it up, hence they are liable for security and other updates. Same goes for the Mac. Now on the other hand, when the lifecycle ends, and the customer has been given reasonable amount of time to prepare themselves for it, then its the customers fault for not updating. This isn't a question of one's loyalty to a company Microsoft/Apple, this is a question of a companies liability. The above article mentioned they've known about this security issue for a long time, and did not and will not do nothing about it, hence forcing the users to choose where and when to upgrade. I think that's fair don't you think?

I think it makes good business sense to stop updating the old OS's after awhile. That will get alot of people to buy the newest one. It seems like sound business strategy to me.

Also, good luck getting Windows 95 to use 3GB (or even 2) of DDR memory. Or even supporting half the hardware out there.
Software goes obsolete like anything else. Noone makes Tandy's anymore, you know.

Do I think Microsoft should still be supporting ME? Ok, 100% serious answer here:
No I don't. What I honestly think they should do at this point is issue an official apology for ME and offer anyone still using ME a free upgrade to XP. (Online update with the option to have disk mailed to you for a small fee.)
Microsoft knew ME wasn't good enough to release but they did it anyway, so now they need to make amends.
ME is what happens when you let the marketing divison make product decisions.
