Ok...gimme a second to get over the irony of this post. *snicker*  All this time the SLefties have been up in arms about non-existant government plots to erase the First Ammendment. And who brings proof of a legitimate one!? Yeah-me! The Super Ultra Mega Mecha NeoCon!  So here's the deal, kiddies. While you've been looking for black helicopters and Halliburton scams, S&M and other fetish websites have been blacking out due to the misguided enforcement of outdated obscenity laws. The intent is to protect kids online, but, as usual, the bat the government is swinging is much too large and now we've got an elephant AND a donkey in the China shop. Now I know this doesn't mean much to those of you outside of the BDSM/Leather community....yet...but it should. I find it appalling that websites depicting S&M and bondage images are being shuttered but websites like Perfect10 are just fine. I daresay the level of artistic value is much greater when it comes to S&M and other fetish photography. It hits home because I am active in the BDSM community and I have friends who are pro-dommes whose businesses are being damaged by this misguided crusade. There is something to be said about Safe, Sane, and Consensual or Risk Aware Consensual Kink between two or more consenting adults! As it is, this thread is pretty much going to be about the acerbic quality of your original post, and not about the issue linked.

Kiamat, you really are an enigma. We don't agree on many issues, some of which have very similar root causes, but I am with you 100% on this. Funny how in some ways, it mirrors the issues of the GLBT community.
BTW, Kiamat - you should come out to SF and check out the Folsom Street Fair. You'd probably enjoy it.

This year it is September 24 - which is usually very nice, warm weather for SF.

It's a very mixed crowd - a little of every walk, but it's fun and HUGE - this year is supposed to be over 300,000 people.

They don't look like the type of people who would be terribly accepting of a Conservative, straight, WASP (sorta), who voted for Bush twice, and who is opposed to gay marriage.  Funny how intolerant the "people of tolerance and diversity" can be.  On the other hand, I bet they'd love me in my uniform! On a serious note, it looks like a lot of fun. I'll have to see what my sked and Neyesa's sked looks like. With my job it's hard to plan too far in advance. Also have to see about a hotel and all that fun stuff. Is there a military base nearby? Much of the crowd is from the GLBT community, but by no means all of them. It is first and foremost a group leather/alternative lifestyle folks. "Alternative lifestyle" is a wide brush, used to cover just about everyone into leather/kink and more. I have a good who is ex-military and would know about any bases in the area - so I'll ask about that.
I've been to Folsom twice, although I am not into that scene, I enjoy watching people shed thier inhibitions and explore the freedoms that only an event like this allows. It's also tons of fun. Nothing like watching bystanders volunteer to get strapped up and flogged - just for fun. 
The interesting thing about your efforts for the kink community, as many of the same people that are trying to impose thier morals on that community are also trying to impose thier morals on the GLBT community. I must say, I find it interesting that on this topic, you find your self on the same side of the fence. |
