BBC is recognised many times over as the best new service in the world and the best web news bar none, so imagine my surprise to see a front page article like this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4630938.stmabout the horrors of canabis abuse this morning. It's like a journey back to the days when they made movies like "Reefer Madness," and would be a hilarious joke if they were'nt absolutely serious about it. It's also an extremely sad story about the real destruction of a real family. The problem is it's a story about a boy with a fairly standard onset of paranoid schizophrenia, but it's billed as a story about how "cannabis" destroyed his life. There is only one throwaway line in the middle where the father states that "some people" think the boy would have developed the illness even if he didn't smoke pot but that "he doesn't believe that." The entire rest of it is a long diatribe about how pot will drive you insane and ruin your family????  I am just so shocked to se the BBC pushing this kind of rot in this day and age. Have they no fact checkers? |

I'm surprised they'd print that without any scientific counterpoint. There have been studies that suggest a link between cannabis use and schizophrenia. There have also been studies that link cannabis to milder traits such as social anxiety. None of these studies prove causation. A recent study showed that people who have these traits are more likely to start using cannabis which casts further doubt on the causal role of cannabis. That BBC article is really irresponsible.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I do believe using cannabis in your teens can do things to your head.. But I should think caffiene could also to a lesser extent.. Your brains just no hardwired yet.. Anyway, thats my theory and I'm sticking to it

I'm just amazed that we'll outlaw a plant that is native to our land and has medical benefits to it, yet we allow and promote (through subsidies, tax breaks, etc) fast food chains to keep peddling low quality foods that *do* have serious health effects. I'm glad we've got our priorities straight.

Also, I just thought I'd add my personal story here. In the mid-80's my grandfather was very ill with cancer and this 6'-1" man had dwindled to a mere ghost of his former self. I don't recall his exact weight, but it was very, very low for his size. He couldn't keep any food down and had little/no appetite.
The doctor pulled my uncle aside and told him, strictly off the record, that marijuana was known to increase appetite and could help him regain some weight and also alleviate much of his pain, reducing the need for morphine.
It worked. It did not stop the inevitable, but he was incredibly more comfortable and coherent during his last months. Since then, my family has been very pro-medical use.
