(I guess you *could* consider this mature, but I don't think so. But I guess consider this a warning before clicking it.)

Hmm... homonyms = two words that sound the same, i.e. pray/prey, berry/bury, holy/wholly.

So why isn't "homophobia" two people who are afraid of the same things?

:p

I believe it's because the root 'homo' comes from both Latin and Greek, and means different things in each language.

Excellent lecture.

Well, someone asked a question and I answered it. And I am very well aware of the fact that I am a pedantic old sod.

#3 on the list of why forums on the internets always devolve into flame wars:

People who take every post as a personal, directed attack on themselves and search for the worst, most damaging interpretation of every word and phrase.

Hehe, i thought it was a joke. Wasn't Ghoti's post a message about the lecture linked in the OP?

About the LECTURE: Cute. Well, coming from a (uber) religious family, I just pretty much came to the conclusion that humans will do what humans will do, and if it doesn't hurt anyone, then it's alright.

Of course, my mother hates it when I disagree with her about her claims, buuut I luv her anyways. :D

Now....dance!

Actually, "Homo" means "Same", hence "Homogenous" and "Homonym".
It also means "Man", in the anthropology sense (I believe, but I could be mistaken, that THAT comes from the idea that the genus is like us, or the same as us), but Homosexual comes from the root "same". Homophobia comes from the slang shortening of homosexual to homo.

Continuing from Mickey's statements

There is no fixed rule regarding the naming of phobias. The phenomenon is related to this humorous bit of language:

"If vegetarians eat vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?"

Yes, "homophobia" does not abide by rigid etymology rules, one incorrect etymology is "fear of same" (so a man who is afraid of a man), and another "fear of mankind" (a man who is afraid of other people). Of course the correct one is that "homo" of "homophobia" is a contraction of "homosexual."

Phobias are named more or less first come first served.

Homophobia - fear of homosexuals or homosexuality (but it also means fear of sameness or monotony!)
Androphobia - fear of men (andro- = man)
Anthrophobia - fear of other people (anthro- = society)

Yes, I don't normally do that. Obviously I shouldn't look at the sl forums before breakfast. But anyway, I wasn't at all offended by the remark, because I am aware that my pedantry often shows, so it wouldn't have led to a flame war. :)

In my personal experience homosexual and bisexual people are no better or worse than hetrosexual people. This is good, because it means my doomsday weapon doesn't need to discriminate. :-)

*Ahem* thank you for the linguistics lesson, Selador, but I was making a joke... it was not a serious question, hence the :p. Had I seriously been seeking this information, the :p would have been supplanted by a .

:D

In Latin, 'homo' means 'man.' ("Ecce homo," "Behold the man.";) In Greek, 'homo' means 'same.' (Homogenized, homogeneous, homonym.)
