IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. Its been around a long time.

Best way to get into it - download mIRC from www.mirc.org. The program is free, although you'll get some nag screens to register.

You want to find an "Effnet" server. Once you're there, you can type "/join #secondlife" to enter the chat room.

That's about it.

There are also easier ways to get in - I believe some folks have web-based java applets that provide access to the #secondlife channel - I'm sure they'll post below.

Hope this helps! :)

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. IRC is a massive network of text-based chat channels (rooms) and users all across the world.

And there are lots of programs you can download :)

The #secondlife channel can be accessed through a java applet at Cristiano Midnight's very nicely done website sluniverse.com.

While stopping in to use the #secondlife chat room, you can also join in the forums there, where you can name names, cuss, and just run wild to a much greater degree than in these forums, check the knowledge base for hints and how to's on such topics as how to use alpha channels, click over to Snapzilla to check out the sights, and join the secondlife teamspeak group, which is where the real ruling class make fun of the dupes in the #secondlife channel ;)

You can also get to it through here:

http://www.sluniverse.com/chat/ - there is a Java IRC client there that will work in Firefox and IE if you have Java installed.

Just you wait, the Ventrilo crew and the #secondlife folks are uniting gangs like in that exciting film The Warriors. Can you dig it?

The permanent Skype conference call with the Linden staff beats both TeamSpeak and Ventrilo

The secret video chat is where you go to after rising through the Skype conference call levels.

Above that lies the Netmeeting hookups where you don't screw around with personal stuff but do things like trade financial data with Philip and Omar and sometimes say hello to Mitch Kapoor. Mitch is really fond of swapping spreadsheets, for some reason.

I always preferred mIRC because there was some fun scripting to be done inside the program itself. But as quoted above, there are many clients out there. And if you're looking for no nag software (freeware or otherwise), nonags.com has always been helpful to me.

They have an entire section on IRC clients here

I.R.C. stands for Itty-bitty Red Car, and you CAN'T get into it unless you are a circus clown. In which case it will seat seventeen. :p

Devline is wrong.
An Itty-bitty Red Car is an I.B.R.C.
I.R.C. is an Imaginary Red Car and is what happens to a real car when you drive a square route in a Morris Minor one.
