This thread is to discuss, rationally, Christians who attack atheists, whether physically, morally, or intellectually.

It's terrible that a religion which offers forgiveness as a main tenet spends so much of its time not just defending itself, but attacking those who choose not to believe in it.

Why is it that Christians are threatened by Atheists? Many more Christians are out there trying to spread their beliefs than there are Atheists trying to debunk Christianity. So why is Atheism such a threat? Why do they have to fight it so hard, so single-mindedly?

Why can't they just live and let live?

It's my opinion that those so-called religious persons who attack atheism do so because they are insecure in their own beliefs. They wish to eliminate any reminders of their own insecurities, and so they go after atheists.

Ahh, but that discussion was about Christians who attack atheists, people who do not believe in the existence of a deity. I'm hoping to discuss Christians who attack atheism, the belief itself.

This is easy. Read Deuteronomy. Spreading of the doctrine and elimination of those who refuse to follow it is a key part of Christianity.

Edit: Also, only so-called "strong atheism" (as defined in the Wikipedia, for whatever that's worth) might qualify as a belief system, since it declares a certainty that there is no metaphysical this or that (gods, magic, etc.). This is in contrast to "weak atheism," which doesn't take that extra step of saying, "I know there is not ..."

As one of the latter category, I've made the words of Christopher Hitchens a kind of personal mantra: "What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence." That sums it up perfectly.

Hence, "weak atheism" is not a belief at all. It's simply a dismissal of a belief based on no evidence.
