The big problem with any of this being a new thing is that it's not. Bush says "Roof makers will one day be able to make a solar roof that protects you from the elements and at the same time powers your house."
But we can ALREADY do that. They're called Solar Shingles and replace any typical roof's regular shingles with thousands of small solar cells. They're also about as durable as a typical slate roof. He also goes on to mention biofuel, which is a mature technology and available at at least two pumping stations overseen by DaimlerChrysler in Germany. The negative to biofuel is that you need a vast surplus of readily convertable organics. The US could use it's 'paid not to grown anything' farms for that purpose, but that IS what you would have to do. Along with a lot of other major infrastructure. Honda has developed and marketed a hydrogen fueled generator for the home in Japan. Japan is also home to some of the best battery innovations there are. (The most interesting of which is probably a flexible plastic injected with lithium ions). Now I know I've laid out all this before. It's not really a matter of doing anything new. It's a matter of using what we have. I am somewhat dissapointed that the larger energy problem (our reliance on anything non-renewable) was not addressed. If it had been, they'd likely have mentioned tidal generators in addition to commercial and residental solar. I don't see anything sincere about this push for alternative energy if they're not going to cut subsidies to SUVs. Just think, you can get an alternative energy tax deduction AND an SUV tax deduction on a Ford Escape Hybrid. |

Bush has been pushing for renewable/alternative fuel sources from day one, but since that would actually contradict the hysterics of the Left, most didn't know about it...especially since none of the green groups bothered to come to the policy meetings on this even though they were invited.

Bush proposing the reduction of foreign oil was purely a political statement. He promises a lot in the state of the union address that he has no intention of doing. |

I suppose you are completely unaware then, that our energy policy was written behind closed doors by the energy industry. Various green groups were indeed invited (for a single day), but after the policy had been written and only so that it could be said that they had been invited to participate. To illustrate this further, the 'clean air act' would have better been named the 'burn the skies' act due to it's actual contents. This administration is tough on the environment, not pollution. |

He promises a lot in the state of the union address that he has no intention of doing. Which is what most of the past Presidents have done as well. |

Which is what most of the past Presidents have done as well. Bush has the backing of both congress and senate (or did). It defies reason to compare his ability to get things done the way he wants to past presidents that did not have this ability. So it is not just a lack of campaign promises becoming reality. It is instead outright lying about what he intended to do. |
