Serious question: Is it worth the $400 yet?
I'm still waiting to use it as a personal rendering box once the price comes down and the Linux folks put a good OS on there.

Yes, I have had it since launch. I can't stop playing it, especially PGR 3. Definitely worth the money.

I'da know. As much as PGR 2, Gran Turismo, et al have fascinated me in the past, I think I'm beyond the "any given racer" games at this point. Likewise, I was a bit nonplused by the EA-branded release titles, sequels, and Rare offering.
They all look prettier than the last generation, but I still don't see the state of gaming improving much by these releases.
What I have been keeping my eye on, because it's a damned interesting idea, is the Xbox Marketplace. I've been waiting on the wings watching Microsoft gobble up indy licenses to serve over the new medium - many just PC games. I'd be curious what people think of this feature and the merits of the system itself before I drop four Benjamins on it.

From: Jeffrey Gomez Serious question: Is it worth the $400 yet? As a long time gamer, having spent a couple thousand dollars on console systems alone, I have to go with "no, not completely". The launch was a bit disappointing, one star title being pushed into near-middle of '06, and DoA being pushed well, to now. (and I will not even get into the completely HORRIBLE distribution to some areas) While PGR, Kameo, Perfect Dark, and Call of Duty 2 are awesome offerings, we won't see the 360 really shine until probably late '06. Really, that's typical console-release "Lag". However, this one packs a $400 price tag for the good gear. Plus, some games go for $70. That's a bit crazy considering that's CARTRIDGE prices for a cheap disc of plastic. Wow, suddenly I'm reminded of wasting that much moolah on a Sega Saturn. Oy. However, all that said, the 360 is VERY neat. I am absolutely in love with its profiling and level of convenience. Finally, someone realizes that turning off your gaming console with your controller is really nifty. Oh, and wireless controllers FTW. If you have the inclination to drop several hundred dollars for new potential(like myself, sigh), go for it.

just got mine
12-26-2005 10:11
i was finally able to get my 360 a few days ago, after having reserved it back in July. it was a bummer having to wait, but on the other hand.. not to bad, since there aren't many games to go along with the hardware anyway. the new dashboard interface is awesome. not to mention the system comes with a variety of 4 videos (behind the scenes, trailers, etc..), a dozen songs and a puzzle game called Hexic. the new visualizations are groovy to boot. and this time around, it's much easier to create a profile among all the other options you have. the first night i hooked it up, i had no games bought or rented and had to make due with what came stock in the thing... and i was entertained for quite awhile. since then, i've rented Call of Duty 2. it's important to note that i'm not usually a fan of war games. (unless it's War Games, the movie ) anyhoo, this game has beautiful graphics and highly intuitive game play. i played it for several hours last night and had to force myself to stop playing so i could go get some sleep! lol... granted, it's frustrating that there are such slim pickings for games at the moment, but i'm looking forward to (read: drooling in anticipation of) games such as DoA 4 and Elderscrolls: Oblivion. all in all, i think is was well worth the price tag. from the extensive and fun new dashboard to the wireless controller to the included Live Silver membership to Hexic to, as mentioned before, being able to turn off the console from the controller.. it's a really cool experience so far and i'm sure the future will be much, much cooler. (and let's not forget the whole, "press a button during a game to bring up the dashboard/Live controls feature.. just awesome!)

Try the Burnout series, especially Burnout 3 and after. It's the driving game for people who aren't into driving games, mostly because it's more of a crashing game than a driving game.

I got mine last Thursday. Got it from the local Gamestop, which just opened the Thursday before. I just happened to get the next to last one they had. The last one sold right after I got mine. I just created my Gamertag a few days ago and got my first game today, Call of Duty 2. I haven't played it yet, but did play the demo that came with the latest Official Xbox Magazine disk. Usually I don't really like console first person shooters but this one was a lot of fun to play. This issue also includes a extra disk with the beta to Final Fantasy XI, I haven't tried it yet since it needs the hard drive which doesn't come with the core version. My Gamertag is Dargothe.

I got the controller to use with my PC and it's lovely. The console itself looks like a nice bit of kit, especially the Live Arcade - I'm expecting great things from that, but I only have the money to do one console and I find the Revolution way more interesting. Besides, half Xbox games I want come out on PC anyway.

glad to see this thread come back..

or maybe we should just start a new one entitled something like "Xbox: Gamertags and more"?
anyhoo, i haven't made my gamertag yet.. but, i'll get around to it.
also, i played Call of Duty 2 and it rocks. i don't normally like those type of games either, but this one just works well. surprisingly intuitive and a lot of fun!
i'm really looking forward to Full Auto, which looks like it'll be out next month.. i think. up to 8 players online with lots of destruction.. not to mention the ability to reverse time a few seconds to uncrash, re-try routes, grab missed bonuses, etc.. the graphics look really sweet as well.
rumor has it that Halo 3 is due out in October.. but i'm not holding my breath on that one. it would be a good idea to combat the other nextgen system releases, but i'd rather see a solid game released than a rushed "it'll do" version.
and finally, in March (again, not holding my breath) we're supposed to see the release of the game i've been waiting for all along. Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion. when this is released, i fully expect to divulge all my spare (and not so spare) time playing that beast.

From: Peter Moore on the PS3 launch Well the interesting thing is, when is the launch? How can I time for something when I don’t know when it is? So first of all, the answer is no. To somehow artificially plan something to combat things? They’ll launch, let’s face it. They’ll launch and it’ll be very successful.
There’s no doubt, regardless of whether I throw a title in there or an update of Live or whatever, that it’s not going to affect their launch. You don’t think they’re not going to sell out of PlayStation 3s, do you? You think that if I could create a piece of IP so that PlayStation 3s would arrive at Best Buy and they’d sit on the shelves? Come on, it’s not going to happen. It never happens with a console launch, so the ability for me to distract the consumer, I mean, I’d rather focus on the fact that whatever we do, whether it’s what Rare’s doing or what Bungie’s doing, that we make the best games possible and that we release it when it’s ready and that it moves our platform.
It’s stupid, ridiculous, and almost impossible to say to 80 guys programming, “I want you to make sure they see you can be ready to go two weeks from now.” It just doesn’t work. You know what you end up with? You end up with a sub-par game because you’re actually building a game with an alternative plan in mind other than making a great game. Game development doesn’t work that way, and anything that is of the quality of a Halo franchise, you do not risk screwing it up. And, by the way, don’t forget, we’ve done all this without Halo.

Save the $400 & wait for the DX10 video cards. Trust me. 2. I never thought of that! That is a BRILLIANT idea!!

You know, there's actually a warning in the original Xbox instruction manual not to put it in a hight place because it could fall and injure children.

hint: if you have wireless controllers make sure you have spare batteries handy. It REALLY sucks to be at a critical and exciting point in a game, have it pause and tell you to 'reconnect controller' and then have to go out to the store before you can carry on...

>.< I was reading somewhere someone saying how pointless the wireless controllers were since he had them plugged into the console half the time anyway. A switch to turn the rubmle off would help - my mate's had a wavebird for at least a year and has only had to change the batteries twice.

The batteries dont last very long at all. You can conserve them a bit if you make a point of going into the right hand menu and doing a 'Turn Controller Off' if you pause the game for any length of time. It's prolly not through rumbling, either, since I can't really recall any of my games doing a lot of it.
Saying that, I've never used them any other way. Wireless rawks!
