Whatever Microsoft pushed out over the last few days has completely screwed up all 3 PCs in my house.

My main gaming/internet PC now likes to randomly reboot. REAL fun when playing WoW and in the middle of a bunch of bad guys.

My Media Center PC locks up 2-3 minutes after boot.

My development/design PC is also locking up after about an hour of uptime.

Please, Apple, get the Intel Macs out really, really early. My 30 years of having to use Microsoft are finally coming to a close.

I keep getting a "Update lists" error message. I had to turn off auto updates just to make it stop. Way to go MS :P

I took those update, and did not do anything to me, no reboot, solid as ever. I guess those monthly payments to Microsoft payed off :)

A most useful service to the readers of the thread. I bet they didn't know that the Apple the original poster refers to were the very same Apple at the URL you provide.

Wrong. Apple got it right first, and they continue to get it right more often than micro$loth.

Ditto, don't update until I hear its safe with no bugs, or until they've fixed it..

I hope this doesn't bum you out too much, Aaron, but the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the OS fence. Salvation may not be as near as you think. Mac's have issues too. I'm not aware of ANY computer on this planet that actually works. They all have problems.

I'm sure some die hard Mac enthusiasts will jump all over me for saying that, and insist that Macs are infallable gifts from the gods, divinity made flesh, perfection on Earth, completely hassle free. The truth though, whether the Apple-addicted will admit it or not, is that Macs screw up just as much as PC's do. The only difference I've found is that certain Mac OS versions are nice enough (or maybe condescending enough, depending on how you look at it) to apologize when they make mistakes, while Windows machines just make cold, unemotional announcements.

I know what you mean, my Dad's Mac keeps locking up on him after it not being used for a few hours. Hes had it for a couple of years with very few problems untill about a month ago. Hes even been thinking about getting a PC to replace it.

I've had only one or two problems with the 2 PCs that have Windows XP on it. Then all I've had to do was use System Restore to fix it.

Who made your mobo? Maybe there is a driver to update your chipset to be compatible with the changes to Windows.

Well, one is an Asus, one's a Soyo and the other I think is an MSI. LOL!

This is really only the second time I've had trouble with an update. I rolled back all my computer and all but the development PC is working fine again. Which is okay, because I have a ghost copy of its drive anyway that I make once a week. So it'll be fixed soon, too.

< 5 pcs, all winxp pro, use 2 of them since beta havnt had a problem yet, Msi, Asus, Epox, mb's

Pc's can do odd things sometimes, eh least we dont have to deal with himem.sys, conventional memory, and others ,anymore :P

My big brother couldnt use sp2 , his pc just flopped wildly, reinstalled to sp1 - i dont like rolling back, faster to reinstall, upgraded his mb and it went away.

So i never ever install something i dont want to loose on windows drive, faster to format then to pick out files you need before fdisk!

I don't use XP, so I don't know what service pack they are on but a quick search found this:

From: someone
Depending on the chipset, motherboard manufacturer, BIOS version, and CPU, installing Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 can result in an unbootable computer system. The problem is generally associated with Intel "Prescott" CPUs and its chipsets, but not every such combination will cause a problem. As of this writing, motherboards exhibiting the behavior include:

* Albatron PX865 PE Pro
* Shuttle SB61G2
* Jetway i875P
* Soyo P4I865P
* Aopen AX4SG Max
* Asus P4P800-E deluxe
* Abit IS7-V
* Foxconn 865A01-G-6EKRS

Technically speaking, the problem revolves around the machine's BIOS not installing a production level microcode update. To check whether the BIOS is at the correct level, download the Intel Processor Frequency ID utility. The microcode version is identified by this utility as CPU Revision, which should equal at least 8.

Maybe that page will lead you toward the right direction to resolve your issue. :/

I've had no problems on the one (of three systems) I've updated with the lastest patches. My mission critical systems that I rely on for work I don't update until well after the patches are issued. There's often compatibility issues with various software, like one from last year that caused 3ds max files to become corrupt if they were opened and resaved after installing the patch. I let other people do it first and report no problems before I do mine.

What software or drivers that load on startup do you have common to all three systems? Chances are that's where you'll find your problem.

Bios update cures Windows XP freeze on boot after installing SP2

Don't know if you have a bios issue or not, but they have a whole thread dedicated to XP SP2 updates wrecking things.

Thanks guys for the links. I'm a computer tech by trade, IT department manager. I was just venting in the original post, not really looking for answers. I keep everything up to date: BIOS, drivers, everything. I have the chipsets written down of my mobos and will be updating the chipset drivers if I need, too. They are fairly new mobos, and they tend to get updated more often than older ones.
