There is a sad story in the times today about Charles Webb, author of the Graduate.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2138646.html

As a home educator myself, I have always had a fellow feeling about the Webbs, who home educated their children despite the fact it was illegal at the time in California - and fled the authorities in a series of Nudist camps.

I was thinking we could have an auction in SL in aid of the Webb fund? His arrears for rent are about £3000...I am sure that anything we can raise would be helpful.

If anyone would like to contribute something for an SL auction, please drop it on me in a folder clearly labelled CW Auction: item name: donor name.

Please only drop items you have made on me.

We will also auction people and services...so if you are willing to be auctioned, drop me an IM.
Thanks
Cali

Dude...

From: someone
Charles Webb, the novelist who based the couple on himself and his long-term female partner, Fred...

The pair were so disenchanted with their own education that they removed their children from school so that they could teach them at home, an illegal act in California at the time. They fled the authorities by hiding in a succession of nudist camps.

Fred, who was given the name Eve by her parents, changed her name as a gesture of solidarity with a men’s support group. She and Charles divorced, not out of personal differences, but in protest against the institution of marriage.

... I don't know about contributing to the rent fund, but maybe I'd be willing to help pay for the therapist.

Webb added that it was not the first time that they had had to seek kindness from strangers. “The last time this happened was in Bethel (Connecticut) about 17 years ago. A lady took us in whose late husband had stolen a Stradivarius violin out of Carnegie Hall and she wanted me to write his life story. I didn’t.”

Well I dunno about you, but maybe being from a more than slightly eccentric family myself, I warm to people who are individuals. Home educating in itself is still an activity which draws gasps of disbelief in the supermarket ("is that legal? are you a teacher?" and bizarrely as though all supermarket checkout operators have been on some government-sponsored course, "what about socialisation?" - this last even from operators who can't recognise an aubergine from an artichoke).

This is a highly creative and interesting pair of people...that they are individuals with a very endearing way of doing their own thing, can't be denied. But life would be very boring if we all did the expected thing. They need money. If everyone who enjoyed the Graduate sent them a dollar...end of problem.

You want me to donate money to a couple of adults who can't seem to make ends meet? There wasn't a disaster, their house didn't burn down, no major medical catastrophes, just a couple of people who have chosen to live their lives unconventionally. And, for at least the second time, they can't make it in the conventional world. I'll keep my money going to charities that help people in need, not help people who've chosen to be needy. Thanks anyway.
